Quick info
About The Tannin Level
The Tannin Level is a modern British restaurant at 5 Raglan St in Harrogate, set in a large lower-ground basement room lit by candles, with nooks and crannies and an entrance down a short flight of steps. The kitchen builds its British menu around seasonal produce with local provenance, and marks the vegetarian, vegan and gluten free dishes. Starters include a brûléed goats cheese and a salmon fishcake, while pork appears three ways, as belly pork, a trio of pork and a pork chop. An early bird menu is part of the offer, and lunch brings a set menu of two or three courses.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the steak and the pork dishes, with the trio of pork and the belly pork described as outstanding and a huge pork chop with mash praised as nothing like supermarket meat. Close behind are the starters, especially the goats cheese, one reviewer calling it incredible, and the salmon fishcake and poached egg on fish cake. A burger, a vegetable roulade, fish pie, sticky toffee pudding and coconut parfait also earn praise. Reviewers repeatedly describe the staff as friendly and efficient, and the early bird and set menus are called good value. Candlelit, intimate lighting and a relaxed feel come up often, along with seasonal menus with clearly marked vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. The caveats are small: one reviewer finds it gets loud when busy, another found the chicken soup main underwhelming, and one would have welcomed fish and chips on the evening menu. One reviewer also notes the entrance is down a short flight of steps. One diner recalls a wine glass kept topped up all evening.

“Had out first visit here last night for our anniversary. One of the best meals we have had anywhere. Special note for the goats cheese starter (incredible) and the belly pork main which was outstanding. Will most definitely be returning and soon.”

“We had a lovely lunch here as part of a birthday celebration. We chose from the set menu, very reasonably priced for 2/3 courses. Starters were all uniformly good - in particular the salmon fishcake and the risotto. The ‘chicken soup’ main was a little underwhelming but thumbs up for the vegetable roulade and fish pie. The coconut parfait was an excellent dessert. Full marks for the fantastic service throughout.”

“Very welcoming, professional staff. Large basement room but with lots of nooks and crannies so it feels intimate, beautiful decor. Great choice of seasonal dishes and very allergy aware for those with dietary requirements. Good wine list plus bar drinks. Main entrance is down a short flight of steps. Check directly with the restaurant about access for anyone with mobility issues. Highly recommend this restaurant.”

“We went to The Tannin Level last week, having had a fabulous meal on our last visit. Well, this was equally fabulous and did not disappoint. ! The early bird menu offers fantastic food at an amazing price. I had a pork chop - wow !, it was huge, tasty, and nothing like what I have bought in supermarkets. Beautiful mash with it. My husband had the Burger, which he said was excellent, very tasty. Sticky toffee pudding to follow. Superb. Lovely staff and a nice friendly relaxed atmosphere. We have paid the same sort of price in other restaurants that are part of a chain and the food was nothing like this. This is individually owned and you can see the high standards in every aspect. I have recommended this place to many friends. Looking forward to our next visit to Harrogate.”
