  “Lovely atmosphere and restaurant however the food and cocktails could be much better. Nice bit to sit out and have a drink when the weather is nice. Park in one of the village carparks- some paid some free.”

  “Myself and my Wife had our evening meal here. I have to admit I was a bit concerned after reading a couple of the reviews, but I needn't have been. I had the steak and ale pie and my wife had the Salmon, both meals were excellent. All the food was cooked to perfection, fussy eaters shouldn't eat out and then complain because the food isn't bland. Each chef cooks things differently to others, which people should appreciate. Well done all the staff.”

  “Been a number of times with people, food usually good, so one star seems harsh. However, having had the fish/chips twice and been disappointed, it's time to make a personal one meal post. Look at the picture, how do you ruin frozen chips? They are rarely good, but it takes effort to make them inedible. Dry, over-cooked, and tasting slightly burnt. You have to cut them up smaller to prevent you stabbing the inside of your mouth. Personally I think they are only suitable as kindling for an open fire. Trying to stick a fork in didn't penetrate them sometimes; and the force used would transfer to the chip so it flew out of the plate. Bit like hitting a snooker ball badly only to see it fly off the table. To the person who cleared the table, yes mine was the one with the chips on the floor. Looking around it appeared others had the similarly abused 'food' product. (See picture of what I left.). These are the worst ones I've had since I left university 45 years ago. They were served from a chippy wagon outside the Students' Union. Trust me you don't want to know about them, I completely forgot until this Scottish aide de memories reminded me of the nightmare. The mushy peas? Ah that was a mystery to be solved. They looked a bit dry, but on tasting, the table agreed they tasted like crushed frozen, slightly undercooked garden peas, not traditional mushy peas. This gave them a bitty, granular texture and sweetness. (Left them as you can see) The fish? Batter was ok; I did eat it all. The fish was a bit on the thin side, no thick flakes. It wasn't a fish finger thickness thank goodness. The staff never enquired 'how was the meal?'; even after seeing the detritus of my meal. Don't think the fish and chips will improve short term. Service is always a bit on the slow side here, even if not busy btw. But acceptable. One shouldn't argue about taste, but the music intrusive and wasn't suitable for a dining situation from time to time. My point here and the star rating? It happened twice. Don't order battered fish or chips here.... ever.... Try the rest. :) it'll be much better.”

  “Garvie & Co is a popular stop for people starting or finishing the West Highland Way, as well as locals in Milngavie. It’s a relaxed place to stop for a coffee, a meal, or a drink before heading out on the trail or after a long walk. Mostly locals when I was there, with a few tourist hikers passing through. Nice kind of easy atmosphere”

  “My wife and I had lunch here yesterday. Don’t think that we will be back. My wife had the butter chicken curry which she very much enjoyed. No problem there. I had the Cairnhill burger and fries. I assume that by highlighting Cairnhill that the burger was sourced from somewhere exceptional for its meat. Then you give it to the chef in Garvie & Co. The burger was black, burned and solid all around the outside. When I ate what I could from the middle of the burger, what remained of the burger resembled a black donut. I also paid £2 extra for bacon, two rashers. Which when I tried to put my fork into the bacon it shattered like glass. Surely a chef should be able to cook a burger and bacon without ruining it. To crown it all they tried to over charge us £4 extra per glass of wine.”

  “My husband and I dropped in here for a meal on Friday evening. I ordered salmon which was ok. It wasn't great, but not bad either. My husband ordered home made steak pie but this was very poor. He had a small splodge of congealed mashed potato and some mixed veg which was cold by the time it was served to him. He doesn't really eat veg anyway but I tasted the carrots and they were horrible, they had an odd taste and were not at all nice. The steak pie came in a small dish and looked nice from the top but underneath the pastry, there was a stew which only had about 3 or 4 small bits of steak in it but was bulked out by carrots and possibly turnip. It was more like a vegetable stew with a couple of bits of meat thrown in and was definitely not worth the money. He left still hungry so went to the local fish and chips shop where he had a delicious fish.”

  “Went there on the first night of our small break in Milngavie and enjoyed it so much we went back on our last night too. Food was great , service professional and friendly, I had the black pudding starter followed by the garlic chilli chicken burger on the first night and then the chicken tempura followed by the fajitas on the second visit , all were beautifully cooked and presented and washed down with some wonderfull menebrea lager , well recommended for a decent meal in Milngavie”

  “Really nice place a little spoilt by the fact that they seldom stay open till their published closing time. Supposedly midnight on a Friday, last orders were announced at 22h50 (12 April 2024). The worst we've had (so far) was 21h50 midweek. This is not a complaint against the staff, who are consistently pleasant, competent and helpful, but against a policy which says that 'we might stay open later if we've got more folk in.' That is next to useless. You will get 'more folk in' if the folk know for sure that the place is open.”
