About La Lanterna West End

La Lanterna West End is an Italian restaurant on Great Western Rd in Glasgow, with white-washed wood and blue banquettes in the dining room. The kitchen turns out tagliatelle ragu, and tiramisu is among the desserts. A lunch and pre-theatre menu runs alongside the main one, and the bar pours cocktails and wine, including a limoncello spritz. Downstairs, a private dining area hosts group events, so larger parties have a space of their own. The restaurant also has a second location in the city centre.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often point to the pasta, with the tagliatelle ragu singled out for tender beef and the carbonara also praised, alongside a venison tortellini special and a risotto with Italian sausage described as comfort food. Close behind are the starters and desserts, from focaccia and a caprese salad with avocado to tiramisu and a Coppa Alaska shared at the table. Cocktails such as a limoncello spritz and a cosmopolitan, plus the wine, get steady mentions. Service is repeatedly called attentive but not rushed, and several describe staff accommodating a family lunch and a work event in the downstairs dining area. The recurring complaint is the space: reviewers find the tables small and packed close together, so neighbouring conversations carry across the room, and one mentions a loud diner heard from the opposite side. Portions are generous enough that one party boxed up their mains after big starters. One reviewer found the lunch and pre-theatre menu great value, though street parking is costly, and another praised how staff made a wife's birthday special.

“First time visiting west end location. Nice welcome upon entry, warm & welcoming service throughout, didn’t feel rushed at all which was a bonus too & the food was fantastic. Really good quality & generous sizing of meals too. We shared focaccia with a limoncello spritz on arrival which were great & then I had the Tagliatelle Ragu which was exceptional. The tenderness of the beef was truly great. My girlfriend had the Pollo Milanese which she loved too. Both meals washed down with a glass of wine each (red for me & white for my girlfriend). Both enjoyed them & my Abruzzo paired great with the Ragu. I will add photos below. Few negatives, some albeit not the restaurants fault at all . Tables are slightly too small for my liking, positioned very close to other diners too which unfortunately means conversations from other tables are very easy to hear and unfortunately on the occasion we visited there was a lady at another table that clearly loved the sound of her own voice to the point we could hear her from the opposite side of the room throughout. Whilst I appreciate this may seem harsh to some I certainly noticed it annoyed other diners too. Great to see some authentic dishes on the menu as not easy to come by. We will definitely start visiting here frequently. Special thank you to our waitress & the staff in general for the great service throughout & kudos to the chef.”

“One of the best Italian restaurants in have been to. Beautiful environment, excellent service and and absolutely amazing food. It was my wife's birthday and the staff made it a very special day for her. Very attentive staff but not hurried. The menu is so good that it is very difficult to chose. So good, if in the West end of Glasgow you need to try La Lantrrna.”

“Food was fresh and lovely. Starters are so big we had to get our mains boxed up to take away. Can't fault the food or service however, the space is small and tables are so close together you can hear everyone's conversations. Bit too close for comfort for me however id definitely go back.”

“I used the private dining area downstairs for a work event. It was fabulous. It fitted 18 but could possibly stretch to 20? The staff were sooo accommodating for our needs, the food was excellent, lovely atmosphere. It really suited our needs and everything was done by the staff to make the evening flow well. Top marks from us and from those who joined us! We will definitely be back and couldn't recommend it more highly.”
