About The Tea Cosy

On Douglas St in Glasgow, The Tea Cosy is a coffee shop and tea room set in an upstairs, loft-style space where a teapot collection is displayed and tables are well spaced out. The kitchen keeps to a short, familiar list, with lentil soup and chicken soup alongside toasties and sandwiches. Cake options include apple pie and an apple and caramel slice, and the drinks list runs from coffee to hot chocolate with marshmallows. High chairs are available, making the room workable for families with young children. There is no booking system, so seats are taken on a walk-in basis. The shop opens Monday to Saturday for daytime hours only and stays closed on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary

Soup is what reviewers return to most, with lentil and chicken soup both singled out and often paired with sandwiches and toasties. Close behind are the cakes and bakes, including a heated apple and caramel slice, a sponge cake, a crispy cake and an apple pie one diner calls the best they have eaten. Others praise the coffee, the tea and a hot chocolate with marshmallows, plus a traditional Scottish breakfast and a breakfast roll served with a sauce sachet that had its corner snipped off. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and the upstairs space is called bright, with well spaced tables and tea pot collections on show. The one complaint is small: a reviewer's wife received white bread instead of the brown she asked for on a sandwich. Another reviewer notes that the café opened specially on a Sunday for a party of 17 who came for breakfast.

“Been to Milngavie regularly and missed this place. Great chicken soup, lovely sandwiches and will be back for cake at some time soon. Also lovely staff and tables are well spaced out so although it is upstairs it is a nice bright space to relax.”

“A straightforward, unpretentious, friendly, local traditional café serving tasty food efficiently with a friendly smile. We all had excellent Lentil soup, nice toasties, delicious coffee and the apple & caramel slice (heated up) was a treat. Highly recommended.”

“This was a spur of the moment visit for my partner and I. Just dropped in for a soup and sandwich kind of thing. Our soups were very nice and partner's sandwich looked good - he ate it without much persuasion, so that's enough said. My sponge cake was good, decent portion and plenty flavour. Two coffees sealed the deal. Server was friendly and definitely busy as the customers kept up a decent flow but didn't make it seem too full, which was just the way we like it. Would visit again.”
