About La Bodega

La Bodega is a Venezuelan coffee shop in Glasgow, on Bellgrove St, that sells Venezuelan supplies from its shelves alongside the food and drink. The menu centres on arepas, including the Reina Pepiada filled with spicy pulled chicken, tomato, red onion and herbs. Empanadas come filled with chicken, beans and cheese, plain cheese or beef. The coffee is sourced from Venezuela and served as a Venezuelan flat white, with other hot and cold drinks on the list. Gluten-free items are on the menu. The space is small with limited seating. La Bodega opens during the day from Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the arepas, with the Reina Pepiada described as a flatbread packed with spicy pulled chicken and generous filling, and the bandida arepa also named. Close behind are the empanadas, which one reviewer says take them back to their homeland, and the coffee, including the Venezuelan flat white and the café leche y leche served hot or iced. The pabellón criollo, black beans, guac, plantains, and a well-fried mechada also get praise, along with prickly pear cactus juice. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, with one reviewer noting they walked a table through the menu and another that they made a fuss over a dog. The main caveats concern space and setting. One reviewer found the seating resembled a children's soft play area and felt the music was not Venezuelan or even Latin American. The same reviewer noted that most of the drinks on sale are Chinese, Mexican, or Italian rather than Venezuelan. Others say the place is small and busy on a Saturday, so sitting in can be difficult, though takeaway is offered. One reviewer closes on getting a table by luck and leaving with the black beans as the star of the plate.

“Amazing food, great vibes always. David is always serving with a smile even during a rush! My go-to is the cafe leche y leche, either hot or iced, both lovely. Love the canola which they have as a special from time to time, with a choice of either chicken or beef. And of course, you can’t go wrong with the arepa Reina Pepiada - so refreshing and look at the amount of filling you get!!”

“I visited La Bodega recently and had a mixed experience overall. On the positive side, the food is genuinely excellent. The arepas and empanadas are absolutely delicious—full of flavour and clearly made with care. The coffee was also very good. If you’re going purely for the food, it’s definitely worth a visit. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience pleasant. However, the atmosphere didn’t quite match the expectation of a Venezuelan place. The music wasn’t necessarily dated, but it didn’t feel Venezuelan at all—nor even Latin American. It doesn’t need to be loud or lively, but something that reflects the culture would really improve the overall feel. The seating layout is also a bit unusual. It feels more like a children’s soft play seating area or playground-style setup rather than a comfortable place to sit and enjoy a meal. Combined with the music, this creates an atmosphere that doesn’t quite work for sitting in and relaxing, and feels a bit mismatched overall. There is also a selection of products available, which is nice to see. However, there are very few Venezuelan items—most of the drinks, for example, are Chinese, Mexican, or Italian. It’s not a complaint, just a bit unexpected when you’re visiting a place that presents itself as Venezuelan. That said, I understand that importing specific products may not always be easy. Overall, it’s a lovely place with fantastic food and kind staff, but the atmosphere and interior could benefit from a bit more attention to better reflect its Venezuelan identity.”

“Great unusual Venezuelan lunch: prickly pear cactus juice. Arepas Raina ( a flatbread stuffed with spicy pulled chicken, chopped tomatoes, red onion and herbs) and fantastic coffee, all gluten free.”
