Short Long Black
About Short Long Black
On Victoria Road, Short Long Black is a coffee shop built around its own roast, with espresso pulled from beans they roast themselves and served in ceramic cups. Those same beans are sold whole and ground to order for anyone brewing espresso at home. Lattes come with in-house syrups and oat milk as options, and the counter also turns out morning buns, cinnamon buns, chocolate croissants, and muffins topped with cream cheese icing, alongside focaccia sandwiches and bagels with dill cream cheese. Seating is limited, so much of the trade is on the move rather than settled in. It's a walk-in counter with no reservations taken, open daily through the daytime only. The entrance is step-free and wheelchair accessible, and dogs are welcome, making it an easy stop for those passing with a pram, a wheelchair, or a lead in hand.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are specific. One reviewer says a flat white was made with a single shot and tasted purely like milk, and the barista simply replied "alright" when it was raised. Another describes the staff as unfriendly and unsuited to customer-facing work. One notes the pumpkin and caramel croissant was too intense, and another says there is nowhere to sit, so the nearby park is where they eat their purchases.

“I've walked by this many times and always noticed the delicious baked items in the window display. Amazingly different style of cakes. Well worth a visit.”

“Great customer service. Bought some beans and asked to grind them for expresso machine, but realised they were ground too finely when making the coffee at home. Folks at SLB were happy to exchange the ground coffee for new beans. Thanks guys!”

“If you are looking for delicious coffee then I’d recommend Short Long Black - it never disappoints. I’m quite fussy with oat milk, don’t massively love all brands but the oat milk SLB uses is yummy! I’d recommend an iced oat milk latte. The pastries are delicious and good vibes all round.”

“The morning bun is elevated to high art. SLB maintains a humble-but-superior position as one of Victoria Roads most appealing coffee and bake dispensers, which have arguably helped to keep the street mostly clear of international chains. The team will semi-regularly experiment with new drink ideas, often proudly going against the grain to sample flavours and ideas that are available, right down to limited batch, in-house syrups. Cats may not be swung inside, but take a leaning position at the end of the bar at the top of the shop, and be the envy of the more time-poor southside patrons that frequent this miniature institution.”

“Note to staff: You work in a job where you interact with members of the public. Really nice, friendly and warm people from will come into your store to purchase coffee and baked goods from you. Did you know this when you applied for the job? Normally this type of job attracts affable and social people—Not at SLB! Maybe they’re passionate about coffee. Milk steaming enthusiasts. Bun icing experts. Box folders. One thing they’re certainly not is social or friendly. The staff here would all be more suited to background roles as opposed to customer facing roles. More behind the scenes kind of people.. screenwriters instead of actors. In short: the weird hipster vibe doesn’t suit. You’re on Victoria Road. A diverse and working class area with lots of really great people — try get to know them. Having worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years my unsolicited advice would be to get new staff. Hire locally.”
