Quick info
About Dumpling Monkey
Dumpling Monkey is a Chinese restaurant in Glasgow, at 121 Dumbarton Rd, and it takes its name from its specialty, dumplings. The menu is extensive, with a large selection of dishes. Salt and chilli chicken wings and chilli chips are on that menu. Ordering happens at the counter rather than through table service, and that applies to the dumplings as much as to everything else. The dining room has four-person tables.

Customer Review Summary
Recent reviews are more critical, and the complaints cluster around food quality and service. Diners report bland, watered-down curry and sweet and sour, soggy potstickers, oily or tasteless dishes, and seafood fried rice with flavourless shrimp, mussels and squid. One notes mistakes and omissions with orders at several tables. On service, reviewers describe unfriendly staff who cleared plates before diners finished, rushed people to order, and spilled food without apologising. One regular left after a request to move to a seat with back support was refused.

“Food here is unreal, if you have only one goal in this life let it be to get the salt and chilli chicken wings from dumpling monkey. Probably not the kind of place to take a first date or your in-laws (you go up to the counter to order instead of table service, its usually pretty busy and loud in there, and staff certainly don’t fuss anyone with all that ‘how is your food today can i get you anything else’ lark). A lot of the negative reviews seem to be talking about the service, but if you’ve got enough sense to avoid six by nicos for a quick bite to eat on your lunch break, then you’re not gonna be confused when your 10/10 £4.80 chicken wings don’t get served to you on a silver trolley by a bloke in a tailcoat. great dishes at such a great price. Food also comes out so fast that you’ll wonder how they do it, epically with such an extensive menu. a must visit!”

“The food was fair, but the service was extremely disappointing and disgusting. I arrived carrying several pieces of luggage and asked if I could use one of the empty four-person tables, but my request was directly refused. Shortly afterwards, two white customers were seated at a four-person table. I cannot explain why the same flexibility was not offered to me, but the inconsistency made me feel I was treated differently. The receptionist's attitude throughout my visit was also super unfriendly. It was a very unpleasant experience.”

“Genuinely disappointed as I’ve visited this place many times in the past decade and was always very pleased with the quality of food. Once upon a time I would’ve called it the best Chinese this side of town. I ordered with them again recently after not having done so for a while, and it’s shocking how the quality has declined. We ordered curry and a sweet and sour and they were both extremely bland and watered down. The veggies and potstickers were also soggy and tasteless. It’s a shame as I used to love this place, but will likely never return for more.”

“Super fast, no frills, tasty and pretty authentic. Most importantly, cheap! Really great if you're wanting a quick tasty bite that won't break the bank. Getting noodles (that are actually decent) under £10 is so rare. Please never change.”

“I’ve been a regular at this place for about 2 years now - it is somewhere me and my sister go very often. I have also recommended this place to a lot of people and taken a lot of my friends here. They have a large selection of food to pick from and typically the food is good for the price. However, the past few times I have come here the food was either too oily or just tasteless. But that isn’t the reason why I am now giving this place 1 star. The reason is how rude the staff are and unwelcoming this place is. I tended to ignore how rude they were in the past because I thought it just came down to a language barrier. However, the last two times our service was terrible. The staff began cleaning up our food despite us not being finished and one of them spilled a little bit of the food on my sister’s arm but did not apologise. Then the latest time I visited, my sister TRIED to ask the staff if we could sit on the other side of the restaurant. They didn’t even hear her reasoning and kept saying no. I then interrupted and told the lady that my sister was having back pain (due to some medical issues shes facing) and that is why she wanted to sit on the other side of the restaurant where the seats have back support (where they were trying to sit us there was no back support- it was just a small stool). The lady immediately said no we can’t do that and after asking again she again just waved her arms and said no. So me and my sister just left. There was no reason for them not to accommodate our simple request as the restaurant was not busy at the time and there were plenty of empty seats on the other side with a seat with back support. It is especially disappointing given both me and my sister have been a regular for years now. I am not sure if it is racism or what - but I have never seen them treat white customers this way. Also just to add the staff are always trying to rush people to order or rush them out. Disappointed and will not be returning.”

“Dear Dumpling Fans! Dumpling Monkey will be closed for two weeks in June 2024 for refurbishment. The dining room needs a makeover and the signage is looking a little dated! We look forward to welcoming you back in July. Stay tuned!”
