About Ho Wong
Ho Wong is a Chinese restaurant in Glasgow, at 56 Waterloo St, serving Cantonese dining on the ground floor. The Chung family opened it in 1986 on York Street and still owns it, so the same family now runs it at the Waterloo Street address. The menu includes duck pancakes and salt and chilli spare ribs as a starter. A set menu for two covers shared meals, and a lunch set menu works as a business lunch option. The restaurant opens daily.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the food, with one reviewer calling the salt and chilli ribs a standout for meat that melted off the bone and another saying the duck pancakes were out of this world. A black bean beef main was called succulent and tasty, and a set menu for two left one table with far too much. Service divides reviewers. Several describe friendly, attentive, welcoming staff, while others report a cold reception, including a takeaway customer told to sit there before the staff member went off to chat with a colleague, and a manager who did not smile. Prices draw the most complaint, with several calling the portions small for the cost, the ribs starter and the beef main among them, and one reviewer saying the business lunch menu is the only way they would return. The decor is called lovely and the restaurant spotless. On one packed evening, a diner was asked to leave the table the moment the cutlery went down.

“The food was truly excellent but the prices extortionate compared to the Business lunch menu. There is an almost robotic welcome and constant rapid attention which makes you a bit on edge as you think you are on a production line rather than enjoying a relaxing and delicious Chinese meal. I will return but only for a Business lunch!”

“We visited yesterday for a graduation dinner. The restaurant itself is very nice, clean, and has a pleasant atmosphere. The food was tasty and well prepared, which was the highlight of our visit. Unfortunately, the service let the experience down. The staff, including the manager, were not very welcoming and didn't appear friendly or smile, which made the atmosphere feel quite cold. We also found the portion sizes to be very small for the price, making the meal feel significantly overpriced. Overall, while the food was enjoyable and the restaurant looks lovely, the poor customer service and high prices mean we wouldn't rush back”

“I’d heard good things and it did not disappoint - the quality of the food and service was outstanding - beautifully decorated, understated atmosphere- highly recommend. ⭐”

“The food was exceptional, and the staff were extremely friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our visit. The portion sizes were just right for us, and the restaurant itself was spotless, with a lovely atmosphere and tasteful décor. Having read some of the other reviews, I can understand why some people feel the prices are slightly on the higher side. However, considering the quality of the food, the excellent service, and the overall dining experience, I feel it is well worth the cost. We would happily return.”

“Went for a birthday dinner. The decor was lovely and the food was decent. Service was generally good, though as other reviewers have noted, there was one lady (who appeared to be a manager) who wasn't very welcoming. She didn't smile and rushed us through the menu, but the rest of the staff were lovely and accommodating, so we didn't let it dampen our mood. It was also midweek and not very busy and we booked ahead.”

“Ho Wong is a legendary Chinese restaurant, and an institution of Glasgow’s thriving culinary scene, with a reputation for quality that extends well over three decades. Established in 1986 (originally on York Street), the restaurant remains under the ownership of the Chung family today, and is still serving world class, freshly prepared Cantonese dining at the epic new restaurant on Waterloo Street.”
