About Crazy Wok

Crazy Wok is a Chinese restaurant at 173 Dumbarton Rd in Glasgow, where the soup of the day is free and diners help themselves. The kitchen makes its roast meats in-house, including char siu, and cooks clay pot dishes such as clay pot rice, with staff mentioning the cooking time when you order. Fried chicken sits alongside rice and noodle dishes, and Hong Kong style milk tea is served cold from the fridge. A lunch special pairs a chosen sauce and protein with rice and a drink. Orders go in at the counter, then you pick a table. The numbered menu is posted at the entrance and on the tables. A side station holds Chinese black vinegar and chilli oil for seasoning, and free boxes are provided for leftovers.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the roast meats and big-portion Hong Kong style dishes, with char siu pork and roast duck singled out, and the claypot rice drawing repeated praise. Close behind are the crispy fried chicken leg, beef ho fan, aubergine with pork mince and a special chow mein loaded with chicken, beef and king prawns. Many describe generous portions, a free chicken soup to help yourself to, and takeaway boxes for leftovers. Staff are called friendly and patient, even when ordering from the large menu was difficult. The main criticisms are about particular dishes: the salt and chilli squid was less crispy and spicy than hoped, one diner found the rice in a sausage claypot too dry, and the Hong Kong milk tea fell short of expectations for one reviewer. One also felt a can of Irn Bru was overpriced. Claypot dishes are made fresh, and staff warn of a wait when ordering. Several mention a sauce station with black vinegar, soy and chilli oil, and one reviewer travelled from Edinburgh for the food.

“Popped in to the crazy wok Saturday evening at 6pm, bank holiday weekend. Casual cafe vibe .. Grab a table and order at the counter. Menu at the entrance and also at the tables. Some special posted on the counter. Cafe pretty busy when we arrived. A lot of Chinese diners. The lady behind the counter was friendly and patient while I tried to navigate the big menu and order for 4 . The menu items are numbered for ease of ordering. Our order came to £54, daughter decided to add a HK Lemon tea at £4.50. We ordered a crispy chicken leg ( special on the wall £4.40), salt and chilli squid, aubergine with pork mince, beef ho fan - flat rice noodles and roast char sui pork with rice. While we waited we had the free chicken broth soup . Waited roughly 20 mins for our dishes to arrive. You can hear the chef working away in the kitchen, with the banging of the wok. On the side is a sauce station. Chinese black vinegar, soy sauce, chilli oil, and sriracha, that you can help yourself to. They were pipping hot esp the aubergine. Good flavours all round, and big portions. The squid wasn't as crispy as I was use to and I prefer it spicy, this lacked it. The beef ho fan had a good number of thick pieces of beef , nicely seasoned dish. The charsui was tender and had a lovely sweet glaze. The Chinese leaf cooked with a nice bite and naturally sweet , came with a bowl of rice . The aubergine was soft , the flavours in the sauce were beautiful and have a good amount of minced pork. I added some chilli oil to give it a lil kick. We ended up taking some home. They provide containers free of charge on the side. A lovely experience and exactly what we were after. As my son gets rather impatient when waiting for his food to arrive. He really enjoyed the chicken leg, crisp outer skin and juicy meat inside. With a little seasoning powder over the top.”

“Food was really good and we didn't expect the serving size to be so generous. We ordered (and loved) the special chow mein (noodles) and Eastern Tasty Soup Noodles (combo of Szechuan style hot and spicy + grilled pork loin + ramen). The chow mein was unbelievably protein-packed with chicken, beef, king prawns and tender BBQ pork. Service was friendly, efficient, and not too chatty - exactly how I like it. Can't wait to be back...”
