About Friends Chinese Cafe
Friends Chinese Cafe is a cha chaan teng, a Hong Kong-style cafe, at 273 High St in Glasgow. It runs as a Cantonese canteen with a large menu printed on thick plastic pages. It takes cash only, so guests need to bring cash with them. The crispy wonton noodle soup also comes in a curry version, and the kitchen turns out fried rice and fried noodle dishes alongside it. A lunch set lets you choose two courses, a starter and a main, and it is served from the morning. Chinese tea comes with the meal. Seating is in booths or on benches, with the payment counter at the back. The cafe is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays.

“I’d seen the reviews mentioning it’s Cash Only, so I stopped by the Tesco Express ATM down the street to pull GBP from my Chase USA debit card before heading over for a late lunch. I arrived around 2pm and the menu was honestly overwhelming in the best way — so many options. I asked the waiter for recommendations; he asked whether I preferred rice or noodles. When I said noodles, he suggested a pork chop fried noodle, beef fried noodle, or the curry fried crispy wonton noodle soup. I chose the soup, and it was fantastic — a huge, filling portion with rich flavors, super comforting, and just spicy enough to get my nose running a little. Total was £13, paid at the register counter in the back. Highlights: - Friendly, efficient service - Comfortable bench seating - Surprisingly strong Wi‑Fi (perfect for watching videos while dining solo) - Complimentary hot Chinese tea with my meal - Drinks and food served piping hot - One WC before the pay counter (clean but old, and also used to store cleaning supplies) Our stay in Glasgow is short (only 2.5 days) since we leave tomorrow around 5pm, but if we have time I’d love to come back and try more dishes — or bring my husband, because he’d definitely enjoy it. Highly recommended!! 🤤”

“Tried the Five Spice Beef Flanks with rice, insanely good. Finally found a local authentic Chinese place to eat. The service was great and quick. The only problem is they accept cash only. But it’s totally worth it. Definitely coming back again.”

“Authentic Cantonese/ Hong Kong canteen. Food is amazing, portion is large, and price is more than reasonable. Lemon tea is legend - exactly the same as what I had in hk. Service was good too. They were so nice and offered my mom some hot water (and we appreciate that!)”

“Lovely lunch and service, really low key in the best of ways, that's my cup of tea. All seats are booths so it's nice, private and quiet Noodle crispy wonton soup was amazing, so was the fried rice. Really big portions I absolutely loved the big menu with thick plastic pages Cash only”

“Impressed with the food. Got a £10 meal deal which included a starter and a main course. I went for chips as a starter which was quite small but the main course more than made up with it in quantity and quality. Will definitely be back to try other items in the menu.”

Customer Review Summary
Crispy wonton noodle soup, including a curry version, is the dish reviewers return to most, described as a huge, filling portion with rich flavors, alongside fried rice that two diners praise. Close behind are the five spice beef flanks with rice, sweet spicy fried chicken, and a lemon tea one reviewer says matches what they had in Hong Kong. Diners repeatedly describe big portions, piping hot food, quick service and cheap lunch deals. Cash only comes up in several reviews as an inconvenience, and one reviewer mentions a language barrier with a polite server. The one critical review is detailed: sticky rice noodle wrappers on the shrimp changfen, extremely disappointing beef meatballs, and roasted duck on a plate full of water with soft skin. Complimentary hot Chinese tea comes with meals, and one server offered hot water for a reviewer's mother.
