About Union of Genius
Union of Genius is a soup restaurant in Edinburgh at 8 Forrest Rd, built around a numbered daily soup menu, with artisan bread served alongside the soups. Boreks sit next to them on the menu, including chorizo feta and spinach and cheese versions. The Comfort brisket bowl comes with mashed potatoes. Breakfast and coffee are also served, and the menu adds cakes, smoothies and specialty drinks. Vegan and gluten-free options are listed, and combo meals are available. Counter staff explain the menu to customers who are choosing between the numbered soups. The space is small, so seating inside is limited.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the daily homemade soups, naming the tomato soup, Indian palak shorba, roast pepper with tomato oregano, and lemon pesto chicken barley, and one notes they came out very quickly. Close behind are the boreks, including chorizo feta and spinach and cheese, with one reviewer saying the borek is worth ordering on its own. Heartier plates also draw mentions: the comfort brisket bowl with mashed potatoes that one diner calls the best they have had, a mole-style braised lamb stew with polenta, and beef chilli with chips that tasted freshly made. Reviewers repeatedly describe the portions as huge and the prices as fair or well priced. The recurring drawback is space. Several say the cafe is small and busy inside, and one finds it hard to get a free table. One reviewer suggests going early because the best soups sell out. Several describe the staff as friendly, and more than one says the staff or owners talked them through the menu.

“We got the beef chilli and it was very yummy! It came with chips that tasted freshly made. It’s small and busy inside the cafe but the food was great and well priced.”

“this was our first meal after a flight and it recharged us. we were greeted with a warm smile over the counter and who knew the food would reflect the staff just as much, the food warmed our hearts. we had soups no. 3 and no. 4 which was a indian palak shorba and roast pepper with tomato oregano. as for the carbs, we had a reuben focaccia sandwich and a chorizo feta borek. im literally battling a food coma writing this review! will definitely come back to try more pastries. i love it here so much”
