Quick info
About Casserole Wang Hot Pot
Casserole Wang Hot Pot is a hot pot restaurant in Edinburgh at 44 Candlemaker Row, specialising in malatang. The brand began in China in 2015. Diners pick their own ingredients from a display fridge, including meat, vegetables, noodles and dumplings, and the staff cook the bowl. Ingredients are paid by weight, which lets each person decide how much goes in, with a separate charge for the broth base. Broth choices include ox bone and a spicy version in mild and hotter levels, and the bowl arrives at the table boiling hot. A sauce bar lets diners mix their own dipping sauce to go with it. The restaurant sits on the upper level of a milk tea shop, and the dining room is small, with only a few tables.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the pick-your-own malatang bowl, where diners choose noodles, meat, dumplings and vegetables from a display fridge and the kitchen cooks everything in the broth of their choice. Udon, beef slices, crispy tofu and a crispy egg come up as favourites. One first-timer tried a frog leg, and another picked an ox bone soup base that was described as super tasty. A repeat visitor calls the beef good quality, and the brown sugar bubble tea gets its own praise. The sauce bar for mixing dipping sauces is mentioned more than once, and several describe the ingredients as fresh and the staff as friendly and helpful with combining items. The spicy broth is called very spicy, and one reviewer suggests starting with mild because it is spicy enough. One reviewer says the cost seems high at first but the bowl left them extremely full, and a vegetarian friend of another loved it. Several note the soup reaches the table boiling and stays hot through the whole meal.

“Fantastic place with a huge selection of soups and ingredients. We loved the concept — you choose your own combination of noodles, meat, dumplings, and vegetables, then everything is cooked for you in a hot pot with the broth of your choice. The variety was amazing and the whole experience was fun and delicious. Definitely a great place if you like trying different flavours and creating your own meal.”

“Absolutely delicious and great selection of food. You definitely pay for what you get - it may seem pricey at first but we were extremely full by the end of it (£16 and i got Udon noodles, a handful of chinese leaf, handful of crispy tofu, a crispy egg, beef slices + free sauces/extra toppings and the broth itself). The broth was absolutely boiling hot on arrival and stayed hot for the entire time eating. It's also nice not having to cook your own food like at other hot pot places. You pick your ingredients and they do it all for you. Also recommend for vegetarians as my friend is one and loved it!”

“Delish!!! Fantastic hot pot style where you choose your own ingredients. If you like spicy, you might want to start with mild which is spicy enough! Ingredients were very fresh, and the soup comes to the table boiling! Highly recommend!”
