About MUMS Great Comfort Food
MUMS Great Comfort Food is a Scottish restaurant in Edinburgh, run out of a retro-style diner at 4A Forrest Rd. The kitchen centres its menu on gourmet sausage and mash, with the mash made with caramelized leek and bacon and served with brown gravy. Sausage choices include smoked, spicy, and chives and cheese. Haggis comes as a starter portion sized for sharing between a few people, and the menu also lists savory pies. Milkshakes and an Irn-Bru float cover the drinks, and vegan options sit alongside the meat dishes. The space is small, and a queue forms for tables at busy times.

Customer Review Summary
Sausage and mash is the dish reviewers raise most, with smoked sausage, chives and cheese, and spicy sausage all named, and the home-cooked chips earning a special mention. Close behind are the shepherd's pie and savory pies, called filling with large portions, and first-time haggis that diners found delightful. The shakes draw praise as airy and perfectly sweet, including a peppermint Aero version, and the IronBru float, raspberry sorbet and treacle and date pudding also get mentions. Staff are described as friendly and warm. The complaints center on waiting and cost. One reviewer describes defending a place in an outdoor queue with no sign-in sheet and calls the lunch touristy and overpriced. Another found sausage and mash expensive for a family restaurant and noted the bacon mash had no bacon. The soup was called small, and the mac and cheese not quite enough for a main. One reviewer's forgotten glasses were kept safe for them.

“MUMS Great Comfort Food truly lives up to its name. We ordered the savory pies—one with a beautifully golden, flaky pastry crust and another topped with deliciously browned mashed potato—and both were fantastic. The filling was rich, savory, and full of flavor, served alongside fresh vegetables and crispy potatoes. Warm atmosphere, generous portions, and top-tier comfort food. Highly recommended!”

“Good music, classic food... Is that not convincing enough? It's a family-oriented restaurant with not a lot of options but full of Scot/British classics. I ordered smokey sausages with Caramelized Leeks & Bacon Mash and classic Brown gravy. I would recommend. The only but is the mash, the caramelized leek is good but if you're into it for the bacon, it's nowhere to be found. The music playing is nice, some rock-and-roll classics and early 80s. If you come at a busy time, the conversation noise can be mildly loud, but I don't think it interferes with the conversation you are having with someone directly next to you. I am not giving it full stars because £14 for sausage and mash feels a little too much, even more providing this is a "family restaurant" where the target clients are, well, families (+3 dishes per table) That aside, the staff are kind and friendly.”

“Located in the heart of Edinburgh, Mum’s Comfort Food delivers exactly what its name promises—wholesome, nostalgic, and deeply satisfying classic dishes. The dining experience stands out immediately thanks to the service. Naisha was magnificent—warm, exceptionally entertaining, and incredibly attentive throughout the meal. That welcoming hospitality sets the tone for a thoroughly enjoyable visit. The food itself was absolutely on point: * Sausage and Mash: An absolute highlight. Deliciously savory, rich, and well-balanced, serving as the ultimate comfort dish at wonderfully fair, good-value prices. * Home-Cooked Chips: Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and clearly made with care—a special mention is well deserved here. * Quality & Welfare: For diners who prioritize ethical sourcing, Mum’s earns top marks. The chicken is sourced directly from a traditional butcher, ensuring high animal welfare standards and zero unnecessary chemicals or additives—a reassurance confirmed prior to ordering. For hearty Scottish comfort food served with real personality and uncompromising ingredient quality, Mum's is well worth a visit. (no discretionary service shenanigans here; we did tip though - means a full five stars - boom!)”

“The food is tasty; it also has vegan options! The staff is kind. There is a short wait in order to be seated but you can just go and they take your name and tell you when to come back. It’s also cheap.”

“Had a great time here! The food is filling and the dishes are reasonably priced. I had my first haggis here and it was pretty good. The starter haggis portion is comfortably sized for three people to try it out. I loved the Bailey's milkshake. It had the perfect amount of icecream for the Bailey's. Very pleasant. My main dish was the sausage and mash. I had the smoked sausage and the chives and cheese. Very tasty. 2 sausages were plenty with the mash provided. I enjoyed the raspberry sorbet. It was delicious!”
