Quick info
About The Red Lion Inn
The Red Lion Inn is a historic pub on Low Causeway in Dunfermline, set in the old village of Culross near the water. Food and drinks are ordered at the bar, where guests keep their table number and pick up their own utensils and condiments. The menu mixes classic pub dishes with global choices, including a steak and sausage pie from the specials, smoked battered haddock and lamb rump. A gluten-free menu sits alongside vegetarian and vegan options, and real ales are poured at the bar. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and dogs are welcome. A public car park is a short walk away past a playpark, with some parking at the rear.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the food, singling out a steak and sausage pie from the specials, smoked battered haddock and lamb rump, with a pear and mozzarella salad and mushroom stroganoff also mentioned. Reviewers also note good vegetarian options and a gluten-free menu. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful, though one says they were busy. Tables are the recurring trade-off: several found the pub full on a Saturday, one ended up in the gazebo, and several suggest booking. A couple note ordering at the bar and fetching their own utensils. One reviewer felt unwelcome, saying the greeter kept offering tables near a drafty door and then one beside the toilet door, and found the food just ok. A vegan couple, by contrast, recalled a waitress checking whether veggie sausages cooked in the same fryer as meat were acceptable.

“Enjoyed a nice lunch in this popular, traditional pub. Good selection on the menu of pub classics, which are tasty and good portions. It was very busy at 13.00 so we had to sit in the gazebo, but still had a good atmosphere. It will get cold though so I recommend booking. Staff were friendly but busy.”

“Trying to get a table on a Saturday is tuff but we got one outside which was lovely. The food was really good but service was not great compared to American standards. You have to order your own food at the bar and don't forget your table number. Also get your own utensils and condiments. Such a weird concept but its how the do it. But overall good food in a nice place by the water with some parking in the back of the restaurant.”

“Lovely little historic place. Great relaxed atmosphere and helpful friendly staff. The food was exceptionally good, both myself and my wife enjoyed our visit hugely. We chose to try this establishment for a change from our usual anniversary destination and we will definitely be returning in the near future! Highly recommend.”

“Highly recommended to stop here if you are visiting Culross. The food was excellent, prepared really nicely. My salad (pear and mozzarella) was amazing, exactly what I wanted on a warm day. The staff is also always looking around to see if you are fine. You need to order at the bar.”
