“We saw this Japanese-style restaurant rated 4.8 stars on Google Maps, so we decided to give it a try. After the meal, I honestly found the rating very difficult to understand. Perhaps the food suits local European tastes, but from an Asian perspective, the quality and execution were far below what I would expect from Japanese cuisine. The restaurant itself is quite small, with tables placed fairly close together. It can get a little noisy, although we were still able to have a normal conversation. One thing we noticed immediately was the limited menu selection. There were no hot rice bowls or noodle dishes. The menu mainly consisted of cold sushi, fried dishes and grilled meat. For one of my friends who is not particularly interested in cold Japanese food, there were very few appealing options. The tempura dishes were especially disappointing. The batter was far too thick, the coating was not light or crispy, and the selection of vegetables and seafood was very ordinary. The squid tasted like low-quality frozen squid rather than fresh squid, and the crab also appeared to be frozen. This was nowhere near the standard I would expect from proper tempura. The biggest problem, however, was the sushi rice. It was extremely soft, wet and mushy, as if too much water had been used during cooking. Good sushi rice is the foundation of nigiri and rolls, so this completely ruined the dishes for us. Some of the sashimi on top was reasonably fresh, but unfortunately even decent fish could not compensate for such poor rice. The sake salmon was shown on the menu as thick-cut salmon, but what arrived was only four thin slices for £6.70. The freshness was acceptable, but nothing special at all, especially considering the price. We also tried several grilled dishes, including beef, pork and salmon. Unfortunately, none of them worked for us. The sauces were far too strong and completely overpowered the flavour of the meat and fish. To give credit where it is due, the staff were very friendly, welcoming and attentive, and the portion sizes were generally quite generous. Unfortunately, good service cannot make up for food that we simply did not enjoy. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. The four of us spent £218, and considering this restaurant is not even in London Zone 1, the pricing felt excessive. We have eaten at Japanese and sushi restaurants in central London with better food quality at similar or even lower prices. Based on our experience, the food quality simply does not justify either the price or the 4.8-star rating.”
