About Roots & Grooves Cafe
Roots & Grooves Cafe is a Colchester cafe on St Nicholas Passage that combines a house plant shop, a vinyl record shop and a vintage pop-up under one roof. Plants are for sale throughout the space, records and vintage clothes are sold alongside them, and art hangs on the walls. The kitchen serves toasties, including a brie and cranberry toastie and a reuben toastie, along with cakes such as a jaffa cake. The menu caters for gluten free, vegan and vegetarian diets, and the coffee comes from the cafe's own blend. Music plays in the cafe, and a DJ spins vinyl. Seating is split between downstairs and upstairs, where the seating is quiet and secluded.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the food, from a brie and cranberry toastie and a reuben toastie to a salad where the customer picks the extras, with the jaffa cake and other cakes close behind. The cappuccino and a wide selection of teas also earn mentions, and reviewers describe friendly staff and a menu that covers gluten free, vegan and vegetarian diners. Service is the recurring weak spot in a few accounts. One couple had to go up to remind staff about their chips, a diner at the next table had to chase a coffee, and another visitor sat without anyone taking an order and left, though one regular says the food waits were not long. Beyond the plate, reviewers point to plants for sale, vinyl records, vintage clothes and art on the walls, and one describes a DJ playing 90s electronic tunes on vinyl.

“A dj actually dj'ing rather than pretending to press buttons. Oh and using vinyl and playing top electronic tunes from the 90s. 5 stars doesn't do this justice. Simply outstanding”

“Independent cafe with a great selection of lunches and cakes to meet all dietary requirements. Their jaffa cake is superb! Lovely coffee and a wide selection of teas. Quiet and secluded seating upstairs. Open seating available downstairs and outside. Lovely staff.”

“Lovely food and decor but the service is terrible . Was told to take a seat and theyll come take my order. Waited 15 min and left. Guy who worked there was outside texting”

“I did really enjoy the food. But me and my wife agreed the tables were pretty sticky. My jumper kept sticking to the surface. We watch one table get wiped and yet there was still crumbs to be scene. The lady on the table next to us had to remind the staff that she ordered a coffee. Which reminded us that we ordered chips with our food. We had to go up to remind them as well. Having said this, the food was good.”
