Quick info
About Coffee Hog
Coffee Hog is a family-run cafe in Colchester, on William Harris Way, serving breakfasts, brunches and lunches. Dogs are welcome and get their own menu, with free biscuits, while children eat free when an adult pays for a meal. The kitchen cooks to order, so food can take a little while to reach the table. Brunch dishes include pancakes and poached eggs with avocado. A gluten free bake of the day sits alongside plenty of gluten free and vegetarian options, and the team takes allergy and intolerance requests and explains the steps it takes. The room is well spaced out and has air conditioning. A play area gives children somewhere to go during the visit.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the freshly made breakfast and brunch food, with the crumpet topped with poached egg and salmon and a toasted sandwich of melted cheese and truffle-infused mushrooms singled out for flavour. Close behind is the friendly staff, described as going above and beyond, including pointing out free kids' meals with a paying adult. Pancakes are called fluffy by the children who eat them, and a gluten intolerant regular praises the gluten free bake of the day. Dogs get free biscuits and even a dog menu. The caveat is portions and value: one reviewer found the scrambled egg and salmon tasty but small, another called the meal a bit pricey, and one felt the food was frozen and quickly fried, with a chicken wrap that tasted like grass and left them hungry. A few note dishes take a while to arrive because they are made fresh.

“Was tasty but small portions. I had scrambled egg and salmon. My friend had two poached eggs and avocado. Two coffees £20”

“Really lovely food and excellent flavours. I ordered the crumpet with poached egg and salmon, topped with tikka seasoning while my mum went for a toasted sandwich with melted cheese and truffle-infused mushrooms. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, so in the end we did the only sensible thing and went half and half! The flavours were fantastic, particularly the truffle-infused mushrooms, and everything was beautifully prepared. A really enjoyable meal — very fortunate to have this café on our doorstep.”

“There was a large group of us and our food arrived promptly. We ordered from the main, specials and kids menu and everything was delicious. Catered for an allergy/intolerance and explained steps taken to ensure food was safe to eat. Lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend!”

“Had a lovely breakfast with my toddler. He enjoyed the play area, my dog got some fuss and I got some well needed peace to read my emails. Staff were lovely and really went above and beyond. Even pointed out to me that they had free meals for kids with a paying adult, which meant I spent a few pounds more but both of us ate rather than just my son! Will definitely be back!”

“Visited a few times, always great food, service and atmosphere- I’d highly recommend.”
