About Duke
Duke is a pub on West St in Chichester, housed in a converted former church, St Peter the Great Church. The building keeps its Gothic architecture and stained-glass windows, so a drink here is served in a space that began as a place of worship. The pub sits directly opposite the cathedral, and a garden of remembrance runs along the side of the building. Dogs are welcome, which suits visitors travelling with a pet. Cocktails are offered on a buy-one-get-one-free deal.

“From church to pub – the fascinating story of The Duke & Rye in Chichester! This beautiful Gothic-style building was originally St Peter the Great Church, designed by architect Richard Carpenter and completed in 1852. Sadly, as the congregation dwindled and renovation costs rose, the church was deconsecrated in 1982. In 1983, the site gained a new lease on life as St Peter’s Market, and in 1998, it was transformed into a venue called the Slurping Toad. Over the years, it changed names before finally becoming the pub known today as Duke & Rye. 🍺 Despite these transformations, the building has retained much of its original character, including its impressive Gothic architecture and stained-glass windows. It is a fascinating example of how historic buildings can be given a second life instead of falling into ruin. Just imagine the contrast—from hymns and prayers to pints of beer and pub chatter! That’s a kind of church I’d happily visit on days other than Sunday 🤣. A remarkable piece of Chichester’s history, located right in the heart of the city, directly opposite the cathedral 😍 On the side of the pub you can find a Garden of remembrance.”

“Stunning pub in the church. Lunch meal from 12nn to 3pm, only from Monday to Friday. The portion is quite small for adults but the taste is good, especially the chips.”
