Il Palazzo is an Italian restaurant in Chelmsford, at 46 Duke St, opposite the bus station and about 120m from the main train station. The staff are Italian or have lived in Italy, and the dining room is decorated with photos of Italy and art. Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the food as authentic Italian, with pizza, a halibut special from the specials board, and the two-course set lunch with a glass of wine named among the favourites. Reviewers also mention plenty of choice beyond pasta and pizza, including good vegetarian options. Close behind is the service, described as friendly, quick and exceptional, and one family celebrating a daughter's birthday says staff could not do enough. A few add that the decor feels cosy with an Italian motif, and that the cocktails and Italian beer on tap are good. The main complaint comes from one reviewer who found the calzone nothing like what they had in Italy and the panacotta sauce bitter and smelling out of date, with only the pistachio tiramisu and the ice cream acceptable. Another felt no one checked on the food or offered more drinks, and one noted a large group growing too loud. One party of four describes finishing three bottles of the house wine.

“Very disappointed with the food. I had calzone(which wasn't close to what we had in Italy). Then panacota with a sauce that was bitter and smelt like it was out of date for a long period. The only acceptable was tiramisu with pistachio which we could finish and the ice cream. Really wanted to enjoy a proper Italian food, but disappointed.”

“Popped in for BH Sunday lunch. I had food from the specials board and main menu and both were lovely. Staff were attentive without being too pushy. Whilst not the restaurant’s fault there was a large group who became too loud which did take the edge of slightly.”

“Here for the second night on the trot, as the first night was so good. Working away and it’s normally hard to find a local restaurant that does both great food and excellent service. If you like top Italian food and you’re in the Chelmsford area, I couldn’t recommend this any more.”
