Customer Review Summary
Reviewers split on this pub. The warmest comments praise the atmosphere and a karaoke night that one group enjoyed, plus staff described as friendly. A Sunday roast beef was called very nice, though its Yorkshire pudding was extremely tiny. Critics find the place generic, with a poor beer selection beyond John Smiths and Guinness, staff slow to notice newcomers, and vape smoke during the football.

“Popped by to watch the football for convenience rather than heading into town, wouldn't bother again. Like being in an episode of stars in their eyes with all the vape smoke - delightful clientele! Barmaid was clearly deaf too, managed to serve a Cruzcampo after asking for a pint of Coke as well 🫠”

“Sunday roast beef was very nice, just disappointed with the extremely tiny Yorkshire pudding.”

“I've popped in a few times over the past couple of years to this pub. Usually on my own but sometimes with the wife. I've yet to be impressed. It is part of the Heineken Star Pubs and Bars chain (I believe) and is indistinguishable from the thousands of others in the chain. The layout of the pub is spacious and the decor is clean and well-maintained and nods to the pub's history and the Border Reivers, but it is generic and 'cookie-cutter'. The beers on offer are a poor selection, with John Smiths, Guinness being the only non-lager/cider choice. These were kept adequately, but staff did have difficulty serving the Guinness. Certainly no hand-drawn ales. There is clearly a community spirit with a hardcore group of drinkers occupying the pool table end of the pub. The problem is if you are not part of the community, the staff don't seem to notice you or are interested in interacting with you. It had a justifiably great reputation in the 80's/90's as a friendly local pub that held events and hired live bands, which I believe they still do. They allow kids in the bar but had a sign saying not after 8pm (or 9pm? I can't remember). However when I was there no-one was enforcing this and they were wandering about both inside and out. This is a pub you go to ONLY if you are in the area and can't be bothered to travel to the better pubs in town.”
