About Mowgli Street Food Cardiff

Mowgli Street Food Cardiff is an Indian restaurant in Cardiff, at Unit C, built around a tiffin sharer menu of Indian street food. Swings serve as seating, so the sharer format comes with a seat that suits a relaxed, round-the-table meal. A set menu fixes the starters as chat bomb and fenugreek fries, then lets each diner choose a main served with roti and rice, and finishes with ice cream. Among the curries, the Goan fish curry sits alongside butter chicken, house lamb and paneer. Cocktails are on the menu, and the staff recommend dishes to help diners choose. The restaurant opens daily, and reservations are required. Dogs are welcome, so a four-legged companion can join the table.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the chat bombs, the starter that draws praise even in lukewarm reviews, with one diner saying they could live off them and another rating them highly while finding the rest merely adequate. Close behind are the curries, with the Goan fish curry and the house lamb called out as highlights, and a cauliflower starter and fenugreek fries also mentioned. Sitting on the swings is described as a quirky touch, and several praise friendly staff who made good recommendations. The caveats recur. Slow service comes up repeatedly, including one drink that arrived on the third time of asking, food served luke warm, and a seat beside a vibrating extraction fan. One reviewer found the fries soggy and overcooked, another thought the cocktails average and the rice overpriced, and one reviewer reports undercooked chicken served to a child and a greasy butter chicken. One diner whose complaints were passed to the business says it apologised and addressed them the next day.

“My friend had been to Mowgli before, but it was my first visit, and I can honestly say it won’t be my last! As we couldn’t decide what to order, our lovely waitress recommended a few dishes for us, and every single one was absolutely incredible. The chat bombs were the absolute highlight for me – I genuinely think I could live off them! The staff were so pleased to hear how much I loved them, which says a lot about how much pride they take in what they serve. The curries were rich, full of flavour and beautifully presented, and even the desserts were amazing. The service was exceptional from start to finish. Everyone was so friendly, welcoming and genuinely passionate about the food. We felt really looked after throughout the whole evening. Sitting on the famous swings made the whole experience even more memorable. It’s such a quirky, unique touch and really adds to the atmosphere. The food, the staff and the whole vibe were absolutely spot on. We left already planning what we’ll order on our next visit. If you’re looking for somewhere a little different with amazing food and outstanding service, I can’t recommend Mowgli Cardiff highly enough! We will definitely be back. ❤️”

“Have eaten here before but not for a while. Delighted to return as the Bombs are still delicious. Enjoyed the flavours amongst the dishes we choose. the house lamb was a delight. Thank you Connor for looking after us. Hope to return again soon”

“Went to the Cardiff restaurant. Service was somewhat slow. The ambience was pleasant and the decor was lovely. I felt the food was adequate. Didn’t blow me away and I’ve Had far better Indian food best part was the starters (chat bombs 10 out of 10) the rest we had the butter chicken lamb and paneer was okay. The portion sizes were ridiculous and the rice portion size very ridiculous as these restaurants buy at least 25 kg sacks the rice was £.10 worth but somehow was £4 or thereabouts. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad I went wanted to go there for ages certainly wouldn’t go again and certainly wouldn’t recommend it far better local authentic Indians with a far more reasonable price point the service was very very slow. The decor was beautiful and very relaxing. The cocktails average quality felt like they could’ve come straight out of the tin from Lidl sorry not a fan.”

“🚨 Absolutely DISGUSTING!! AVOID this place!! 🚨 - ordered butter chicken, it was dripping in grease and the curry and chicken tasted horrible , furthermore the other chicken I ordered for my little one looked and was abysmal, uncooked & tasted horrendous, definitely not like fresh normal chicken. (Unedible) THIS PLACE IS A EASY MISS, save your money.”

Highlights

“Mowgli is all about how Indians eat at home and on their streets. She was born to feed the raw need Indians have for tiffins full of fresh bright intense flavour. Mowgli is not about the intimate, hushed dining experience. It is about the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs and spices. The simple dishes of a Mowgli menu are a million miles away from the curry stereotype. These dishes convey the truth that real Indian food is extremely healthy, often vegan and always packed with fresh flavour.”
