About Against the Grain Coffee House
In Cardiff, Against the Grain Coffee House is a coffee shop at 44 Merthyr Rd where the whole kitchen is gluten-free, so every homemade item suits people with coeliac disease. Breakfasts and sandwiches fill the savoury side, and the light lunch menu includes Eggs Florentine alongside a mushroom dish and an avocado dish. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the fact that everything is completely gluten free, which coeliac diners describe as rare and reassuring. One calls it coeliac-safe, and several say non-coeliac friends enjoyed the food too. The bakes draw the most named praise, including the pistachio raspberry blondie, the scone, the blueberry muffin and welsh cakes. Close behind are lunch dishes such as Eggs Florentine, a mushroom dish and an avocado dish. Coffee is called excellent and high quality, and the drinks are described as delicious. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, lovely and welcoming, the decor is called lovely, and one reviewer enjoyed the little garden outside. Another says the bakery comes without the hefty gluten-free tax. One parent of a daughter who is both gluten and dairy free emailed ahead and got a quick confirmation. They took away a mint choc chip bun, then returned two days later on the way home to Sheffield for two more, which the daughter said lacked the stale texture common in GF and DF cakes.

“My favourite place in the world! Against the Grain are not only run by the loveliest people, but they provide comfort to coeliacs like me that everything is deliciously 100% gluten free, which is rare anywhere else. The food is phenomenal - even my non-coeliac friends think so! The drinks are always delicious too. I cannot recommend this place enough ❤️”

“Absolutely incredible little Cafe. Amazing bakery without the hefty gluten-free tax, great meals and breakfasts and delicious drinks as well. Lovely atmosphere and great customer service. You couldn't ask for more.”

“Met friends here as one friend has Celiac disease... I was somewhat reticent as I've seen some of the menus promoted as gluten-free. It was utterly brilliant, the food was fresh, tasty and divine. The atmosphere was excellent and the service first class... incredibly reasonable also. Deserves wider recognition”

“Emailed in advance as my 16 year old is gluten but also dairy free. They confirmed really quickly they would have items to suit her needs. Called in to have lunch but on the day daughter was unwell. Staff were lovely and concerned something was wrong. So got a latte for the other half and a mint choc chip bun (GF and DF) for the daughter to take away. Daughter said the bun was amazing. So 2 days later we visited on our way home to Sheffield to get 2 more buns to takeaway. Daughter said they are the best she's tasted and didn't have that stale texture you often get with GF and DF cakes. We wish we were closer so we could visit regularly!”
