Quick info
About The Secret Garden
The Secret Garden is a cafe in Cardiff, on North Rd, set in a courtyard by the information centre in Bute Park's walled garden. The kitchen makes its quiches, frittatas and cakes at home, and the savoury plates come with sides such as salad and coleslaw. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options are on the menu, including a gluten free salted chocolate brownie. Soft serve ice cream comes in a flavour that changes every week. Guests who bring their own reusable cup get a discount on hot and iced drinks. The cafe is walk-in only, and a short wait is likely at busy times.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the quiche, with the Mediterranean pesto version and a quiche with salad and coleslaw both singled out as tasty, and a frittatas and cakes spread alongside it. Close behind are the baked goods, including a gluten free salted chocolate brownie, a gluten free pistachio and rose loaf, and a honey salted brownie, plus a goat cheese sandwich called filling. Several praise the vegan, vegetarian and gluten free choices, and the setting in Bute Park's walled garden, with outdoor seating and friendly staff. A discount on hot drinks for bringing a reusable cup comes up repeatedly, and one reviewer says a cortado was made even though it wasn't on the menu. Coffee gets good marks, though one reviewer calls it pricey. Criticism centers on food and treats: one says the food was cold and very pricey, and another didn't love the hot chocolate or pastries, though the weekly-changing soft serve earns praise. Reviewers also mention it being busy, with a short wait likely.

“Popped in for some refreshments whilst walking through Bute Park. Oh, my. The gluten free pistachio and rose loaf was SO delicious!! And the gluten free salted chocolate brownie is probably the best chocolate brownie I've had in over a decade! Will definitely head back there. It's clearly very popular so a short wait is likely. The service was excellent though.”

“Lovely little cafe area in a private courtyard area by the information centre. Serving home made quiches, frittatas and cakes. I had a Mediterranean pesto quiche which was amazing. Some gluten free options.”

“A great name for a café hidden in Bute Park's historic walled garden. There are lots of benches and lawns to sit and make the most of refreshments here, and sheltered benches inside. Hugely popular all year round and pretty in spring and summer.”

“The goat cheese sandwich was delicious and really filling, and the honey salted brownie was amazing. It was very busy while we were there but all the staff were lovely and sitting in the gardens is perfect on a spring day.”

“Really lovely place to get a coffee or bite to eat in the middle of Bute Park. One of my favourite lunch spots on Cardiff. - You get a big discount on hot or iced drinks if you bring your own reusable mug. This is a really nice incentive for reducing waste. - Food is really tasty and a generous sized portion for the price. - Lots of good vegan and vegetarian options. - Beautiful location in the park. - Really friendly staff.”
