About Cafe Castan
Cafe Castan is a cafe on Cathedral Rd in Cardiff, open daily with no booking needed. Outdoor tables overlook fields and trees, and a half pizza topped with egg and capers is available alongside a chicken salad sandwich and coffee. Ice cream is served as a single scoop on a cone. Food can be taken away or eaten at the outside tables, though that seating is cleared before closing. The step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, and high chairs make the space workable for families with young children. Dogs are welcome throughout.

Customer Review Summary
The half pizzas draw the most repeat mentions, with reviewers praising the veggie pizza and the capers topping, and one describing it as the best veggie pizza they'd had in Cardiff. The chicken salad sandwich and a burger with coffee also get singled out favourably, alongside the setting near Pontcanna/Llandaff fields. Coffee and general food quality are called lovely or great by several reviewers, and staff are frequently described as friendly. That said, a recurring complaint centers on one male staff member at the till, described by multiple reviewers as abrupt or rude, including one told "no egg, grills off" when requesting a topping and another whose partner was refused a small adjustment to a baguette. One reviewer also reports inconsistent pizza sizing between visits despite paying the same price, and another notes being pushed to vacate outdoor seating well before closing on a warm afternoon. A separate reviewer found their ice cream scoops fell off the cone and noted no sauces or sprinkles were offered. Despite these frictions, several reviewers still call the food generally nice, with one specifically thanking staff after a chicken salad sandwich visit.

“£3 for a single scoop ice cream. No sauces or sprinkles available. I think my sever was a novice scooper as both kids ice creams fell staight off the cone on the first lick. I couldn't be bothered to go back and ask for two new ones.”

“Lady at the till was lovely and the pizza 👌🏼. The guy who works there SOOO rude (look at the other reviews), hence 3 stars. Won't be returning as a result. Shame really.”

“3:45pm on a summer's day with 25 degree heat and they're taking in the outside seating when they are open until 5pm - it's ridiculous! If you don't move you're made to feel uncomfortable until you do. It's not a new thing, they always do it - and everyone comments on it. It's not as if it's last orders in a rowdy pub and you need to get people out. Show some respect for your customers who spend a lot of money with you and make us feel comfortable to eat our food at your establishment until you close.”

“I used to regularly visit here but really been put off after 2 very negative interactions on separate occasions with an older man serving at the desk. Very abrupt on 2 occasions with both me and my girlfriend. Her for simply asking for a small adjustment to a meal (no cheese/butter on a baguette) and me for asking for an egg on a pizza which is literally a topping listed that I have had multiple times before. He was really nasty and aggressive “don’t have that” “don’t do that” “no egg grills off” not at all polite to customers and it has put me off going there. A shame as the food is generally nice if nothing spectacular and the rest of the staff have always been really lovely, but I don’t want to be spoken to abruptly and made to feel like a nuisance just for asking a question or ordering something they literally have on the menu.”

“Quick snacks to take away or eat at the outside tables. The atmosphere is very good, views of the fields and trees, etc. I had a very nice burger and coffee for under £10. Eating a burger can be a bit messy so you’ll need plenty of paper napkins.”
