About Queens Vaults - JW Bassett Pub
Queens Vaults - JW Bassett Pub is a pub in Cardiff at 29 Westgate St, with six cask ales on the bar. Guinness, cocktails and a selection of beers from several countries sit alongside them on the drinks list. Three pool tables, darts and a jukebox give groups of friends something to play, and music runs through the pub. Sport is shown on Sky, TNT and Viaplay. The kitchen cooks a triple smash cheeseburger with chips, a full English breakfast and beef curry with chips. A carvery rounds out the food offer.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the friendly staff, with a barman who told stories about each of the beers from several countries and a manager who welcomed a big group close to kitchen closing time. Food comes close behind, especially the cheese and bacon burger, the triple smash cheeseburger with chips and coleslaw, and a full English breakfast, while the beer selection, cask ales and pool tables also draw comments. One visitor called a Guinness perfectly served, and others describe the music and atmosphere as friendly, with one saying it surpassed any pub in London. Criticism is sharper but less frequent. One reviewer found the Guinness watery and bitter in a dirty glass, well short of the beer mat's claim of the best in Wales, and another called the beef curry tasteless and dry, with hard chips, on a second visit. A third objected to Neck Oil costing £6.50 a pint, calling it not worth the money. Even so, one praised the prices as affordable, and one visitor returned the next day for a quieter, more relaxed visit.

“Was only in Cardiff for the day with my wife, and we stumbled across this pub. We got chatting to Nicky who was working behind the bar. Talk about incredible customer service! They serve very nice beers that come from several countries and she was able to tell us a story about every one of them (which for two tourists is very interesting). She kept coming back to us to chat in between serving other people as well. Fully recommend to anyone visiting Cardiff.”

“I've always liked this pub but won't be going back now I've realised how high their prices are. I was drinking Neck Oil, not because I particularly like it but I didn't fancy any of the other beers they had. At first I was buying rounds so didnt realise the price but when I went to the bar to buy a single pint I was shocked to realise that it was £6.50 per pint! Neck Oil really isn't that great and definitely not worth this kind of money! And the price this pub was charging was actually above the UK national average price for this particular beer! I worked in an independent brewery for years, I know about production costs, I know about wholesale prices and I'm very aware how much profit some pubs make from a single barrel of beer!!! Sometimes it doesn't pay to be greedy because you end up with a bad review!!!”

“I visited the pub again last Saturday to give it another go as I often had a meal here with no complaints. But a again the beef curry was terrible. Where was the beef or the sauce it was tasteless. The meal was so dry. Not madras at all. Some of the chips were hard so. I was so disappointed again.”

“Very friendly staff, the Manager Atia welcomed us, a big group, despite approaching the kitchen closing time. Very good selection of beers, menu not extensive but good choices. Good value for money.”
