About Ye Olde Beverlie

Ye Olde Beverlie is a pub-restaurant in Canterbury, on St Stephen's Green, serving a menu of British and Mexican grilled dishes. It occupies an old building with exposed timber beams and hobs hanging from the ceiling. The menu pairs sharing plates, including nachos, with burgers such as a buttermilk chicken burger, and it also covers traditional pub food like fish and chips. A separate room is used for private parties, which gives groups and birthday celebrations their own space. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Friendly staff are the most consistent praise at this traditional pub, with reviewers also pointing to the old building, the roaring fire, hobs hanging from the ceiling and exposed timber beams. Food draws mixed reactions. Several call it delicious, and one singles out the sharing plate of nachos and the calamari, while another found a burger bland. The harshest account describes a buttermilk chicken burger with half a chicken breast in a tiny bun and soggy, oily cheese, alongside poor table cleanliness and a pungent odour in the bathrooms. Another reviewer found a chicken salad with only a few rocket leaves and dry, stringy chicken, plus oily fish and chips batter and slow service. Several praise it for group bookings, birthdays and a separate room for private parties. One reviewer left after music was turned back up an hour after staff had lowered it on request.

“This has been one of my favourite pubs whilst at university! The pub is full of character and has a lovely roaring fire that keeps the pub lovely and toasty in the winter. The food is also delicious, and they serve great traditional pub food! I would recommend this pub to anyone (student or not) in the area! I will definitely miss it when I am gone.”

“This is a lovely location, has a reasonable amount of outdoor space and a few tables inside. The staff are friendly and this is clearly a community pub, locals are in and having a laugh, a small dog taps away from time to time but still has a quaint feel to it. The pub is let down by poor cleanliness of tables, and a pungent odour in the bathrooms creeping into the hallway between the bar and the garden, vaguely masked with eau du orange p-waves. I ordered a buttermilk chicken burger and a Guinness 0% on a Wednesday early afternoon, this came in at £23.60, which is steep for a low to mid range community pub, not a problem I’ll go with it, looking forward to my burger I sat down and just enjoyed my Guiness 0%. A short wait later my burger came out and to say it immmediately became disappointing would be and understatement, there was an adequate sized bowl of chips that was actually larger than the burger itself. I would say the chicken burger was half a chicken breast in size, one lonely buttermilk battered half a chicken breast. If your imaging how that’s possible, I assume they’ve take a chicken breast butterflied it and then halved it again. The bun itself was a 3invh bun, tiny… absolutely tiny. The bun was excessively dressed with sauce and lettuce (the lettuce presumably to bulk it up a touch) then I added cheese, not a problem it’s what I asked for, unfortunately the quality of cheese used wasn’t great at all, presumably a booker or brakes budget product, as the oils from the cheese leeched all over the burger making it a soggy mess unfortunately. I assume it’s a cheaper cheese as these typically have a higher fat to protein ratio that is evidenced with leeching oil. I wouldn’t mind, but I paid a total of £17 for that burger and £1.50 of that is for the cheese. It’s a shame as I won’t come back here and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone again, service was great, bubbly and receptive and efficient for food service times. Just missing a trick but not charging appropriately for the quality received, it’s a level of meal I wouldn’t even expect at McDonalds from their value menu. I’m one for praise and complaint, but honestly… Shepherd and Neame need to have a serious think about the price vs value metrics. Dont blame VAT for this one, this is all on you I’m afraid. £6.60 for a Guiness 0% is quite frankly insane.”
