About Granta
Granta is a riverside pub in Cambridge on Newnham Rd, set on the banks of the River Cam where punts pass by. A conservatory looks over the water. As a Green King pub, it pours ales and beers on tap. The menu includes fish and chips, a steak and ale pie and burgers, and a Sunday roast is part of the line-up. TVs show big sport events such as the Euros and World Cup, and live music is part of the atmosphere. Dogs are welcome both inside and outside. The pub also takes bookings for functions and celebrations.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the riverside setting, with views from the terrace and the conservatory, where punts drift past. Diners praise the steak and ale pie, the Sunday roast, a crispy duck and lentil salad with black cherry glaze, a burger, and fish and chips. Several also mention a good selection of ales and beers on tap. Outdoor screens for the World Cup and Euros, live music, and dogs being welcome also come up, and staff are repeatedly called polite, helpful and knowledgeable about the drinks. The main complaint is the kitchen. Two reviewers describe very long waits for food, one on a busy sunny Saturday and one when it was not particularly busy. They report dry sausages and fish, tough overcooked chips, small portions, and a sharing nachos platter with little duck on it. One adds that even soft drinks were slow to arrive. Another reviewer notes that punting tour emails and the pub's own A-boards advertise a ten percent discount that the till no longer honours.

“Big fan of this pub. Been on multiple occasions for food and drinks - have never had a bad experience. Food is great, had a few things like Fish and chips, Pie, Chicken burger, Steak sandwich. All very yummy and always pleasantly surprised that it’s a Green king. Allow dogs in and outside. For big sport events they have TVs outside, enjoyed watching the euros and World Cup here.”

“I would AVOID on the weekends and for food in general! We were told food would be 45 minutes to an hour. We were very prepared to wait as we could see it was a busy sunny Saturday afternoon. However, it took 30 minutes for our soft drinks to come out and well over an hour for food to come out. The food itself was awful. The mash potato was stodgy and the portion was tiny. The sausages were dry and flavourless. The fish was dry and the texture of the batter was weird. Parts of the food were piping hot in the edge and lukewarm in the centre. Overall, an awful experience, terrible food and very overpriced.”

“Front of house staff were very good and tried to be helpful. Beautiful setting and great selection of drinks on tap. Food - we ordered 6 meals including mussels starter, falafel burger, chicken burger, ham egg and chips, nachos and ciabatta. It took nearly an hour for the food to come. It wasn’t particularly busy and to be honest I wouldn’t normally mind the wait if the food was worth it but it wasn’t. To be fair the ingredients were mostly of good quality and had potential to be excellent. The ham was delicious, the eggs looked lovely and orange bright yolks and the food really could have been brilliant pub grub. However it was overcooked and small portions. The nachos were meant to be a sharing platter but came with nowhere near good enough quantity or quality and at £17 that isn’t good enough. They were covered with sour cream and guacamole (that looked store bought instead of homemade) with no real substance but not very many nachos. We ordered the duck one but there was very little duck on it. The chips were tough and overcooked on most plates. The mussels were small and a little shrivelled like they had been overcooked though I’m told the sauce was very nice. We went there having booked a tour on the punts next door and the email we received said they offer 10% discount. Apparently the new owners have removed this option from the till but don’t appear to have told the tour providers to remove it from their literature so they are not upholding the discounts. Clearly I don’t know who is to blame for that but it’s not very professional to advertise a discount they aren’t honouring. Especially since they are advertising on their own A-boards to invite people in that are booked for punting. Seems a little disingenuous. In conclusion, the pub has so much going for it but the food really let it down and I wouldn’t recommend, especially for the prices. The staff were lovely though. My final thoughts are that after punting we went to the pub on the other side , The millworks, and it was incredible. I suggest heading there rather than the Granta if you want your discount but with the same beauty and excellent service”

“The main thing that first drew me into this pub was their music choice they had such a lovely atmosphere and the view of the river was just the cherry on top. I came here a while back and noticed they have a completely new menu and when reading through their menu the duck had caught my eye, the crispy duck layered on top their mixed lentil salad left me filled but not bloated and they had paired it with a black cherry vinegar glaze .which at first was an interesting concept but when trying it with the entire dish I felt it had complemented perfectly. I would definitely recommend this dish to anyone, and to top it all off the staff were so lovely and I felt so welcome in this establishment. If your ever out on a sunny day this is one of the best places to come for a meal, pint/drink and a great view.”
