About The Dumb Post Inn

The Dumb Post Inn is a pub in Calne on Dumb Post Hill, with views over the Wiltshire countryside from its dining area. The kitchen works with locally sourced food, including produce from its own farm and surrounding suppliers, so the menu follows what that region provides. Sunday brings roast dishes, with roast lamb among them. The steak with chips and peppercorn sauce is a main course, and sticky toffee pudding sits among the desserts. At the bar, a selection of local ales and beers is poured alongside some whiskies. Groups can pre-order their food when they book.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roasts draw the most praise at this countryside pub, with diners describing roast pork, roast lamb and a mixed roast where the chicken stood out, plus extra sausage and stuffing balls. Puddings come close behind, including sticky toffee pudding, brownie with ice cream, crème brûlée and a sorbet. Steak with chips and peppercorn sauce is also singled out, and reviewers mention locally sourced produce and a good choice of local ales and whiskies. The views across the Wiltshire countryside and the beer garden come up repeatedly, and several describe friendly, attentive staff, including one server who was kind to their dogs and another who brought a celebratory dessert with a sparkler. The main criticism is the food: one group found the pasta dry and stodgy and the risotto thick and heavy like rice pudding, and they felt the small menu's appetizers outshone the mains. One reviewer noted a cold rush of air whenever the kitchen door opened, and another found the barmaid rude on arrival. Several guests still said they would return.

“Huge shout out to the team for being so lovely from the booking process right through to my visit. The lady I spoke with on the phone chose us a really nice table in the shade outside exactly as requested with a great view. From the moment I arrived, the team were attentive and the service was great. I ordered one of the steaks with chips and peppercorn sauce which was all cooked perfectly. I genuinely could not fault my food at all. I’d always heard such great reviews about this pub and finally had the opportunity to try it for myself and I will definitely be returning. Thank you for making our visit so memorable.”

“Walked in yesterday sat down and barmaid was not very friendly and rude. Could of been a tad bit more nicer, but maybe she had a rough day already. Who knows. Hope her day turned around.”

“Hubby and I are currently at The Dumb Post for his birthday but it's also our wedding anniversary! Double celebration 🍾 ✨️ Massive shout out to all the staff there, friendly welcome from the minute we came in. Food has been outstanding 👌 local produce, couldn't fault anything. Fab atmosphere and gorgeous surroundings. Need a mention for Kaytee, who was so bubbly and attentive throughout service but also surprised us with a celebratory dessert complete with sparkler! A lovely touch to round off a special day for us both. Thank you all. 💯 recommend 😊”

“James was the most attentive sever who made our visit most welcoming with stories of Wiltshire, recommending the menu and being most kind with water and belly rubs to our dogs. An amazing view of the White Horse of Calne on the horizon. Food was exceptional. Especially the dessert of crème brûlée which we devoured before taking a pic!”
