About The Three Magpies

The Three Magpies is a pub on Bath Rd in Melksham, beside the Kennet & Avon canal and on the A365 between Melksham and Devizes. Dogs are welcome, and the pub gives them doggy ice cream, which suits walkers and canal boaters who stop in with a four-legged companion. The kitchen serves pub food, with pie on the menu, steak on the specials board and sirloin steak as another option. Sunday roasts are served, and sticky toffee pudding is among the puddings. At the bar, cask beer is on offer, with 6X poured by the pint.

Customer Review Summary

Steak is the dish reviewers raise most, and most call it cooked perfectly, including a sirloin and a special-board steak with proper chips. Close behind are the pie, the Sunday roast, the hunters chicken, the whole trout, the ploughmans and the sticky toffee pudding, with friendly, helpful staff and well-kept 6X and cask beer also praised repeatedly. Walkers and canal travellers describe lunches and quick pints, and one party brought three dogs and found doggy ice cream. Reviewers also mention a beer garden with a play area for kids. The main complaint comes from one reviewer who found the menu limited and unchanged, the portions small and the prices high. They describe a chewy, overcooked steak with a minimal salad and a tiny portion of chips, a dahl curry they could have eaten three times over, and extra charges for cheese, bacon and onion rings on a burger. Another reviewer who was busy at the weekend says the pub fills up and they booked for Sunday dinner. One reviewer ate the specials on two evenings and swapped chips for mash on request.

“Whilst travelling on the Kennet & Avon canal on the day of the Eclipse ( August 12th) our party of 4 adults and 3 dogs had a wonderful lunch here. Food was great, drinks were perfect and delivered to our table with wonderful service. There was even Doggy ice cream for the pooches. I would highly recommend The 3 Magpies.”

“I have visited this pub a few times now while staying on the nearby camp site, I have always been impressed with the service and quality of the food and last Friday was no exception (31/07/26) Steak was on the special board £30.. I grew up in a farming community and I know quality meat when I see it, I can also cook and I know if a steak is cooked properly or not. I normally shy away from steak on a pub menu, not because I am fussy but because meat is normally sourced from a mass supplier, not the best quality and its normally cooked by someone that is good at reading instructions on the packaging, a steak is something you have to have knowledge and skill to cook. £30 a lot of money for a pub steak but I thought I will have a go at that, I ordered the steak, rare side of medium which is different to medium rare and my expectations were high, I was not expecting Gordan Ramsey to turn up and cook it but was expecting something better than served up in Weatherspoon's. I enjoyed a pint of well kept 6X until it arrived. The steak arrived... A good quality of meat and obviously cut by a butcher that had skill and cooked to perfection by by someone that has knowledge and skill , proper chips and garnish.. Well happy with that. verging on exceptional TBH.. I have paid more than double that for a steak in establishments that boast exceptional cooking.. You guys at the Three Magpies are up there..”

“I have no concerns regarding the quality of the food, the friendliness of the staff (or their efficiency), however I have to say that the prices are now quite high and the menu is still extremely limited and hasn't changed in some time and the portion sizes are now miniscule; better suited to child's portions. If you compare the prices, portion size and the variety of the menu with The Brewery Inn (another pub in the local vicinity) there is no competition whatsoever, the Brewery Inn wins hands down. An 8oz Steak at The Brewery Inn is £19.95 and the plate of food is huge. Whereas the 8oz Steak at the 'Magpies' is extremely disappointing to say the least, with a rather chewy and overcooked steak, a lackluster minimal salad and a tiny portion of chips and costs £30. A burger at the 'Brewery' is £13.95 and comes stuffed with salad and includes cheese on the burger with a generous portion of chips on the side and onion rings as standard. They charged me 65p to add bacon to their house burger The 'Magpies' charges £16.50 for a burger with a tiny portion of chips and a bit of salad and anything else is viewed as an extra which you have to pay a premium for; £1 to add cheese and £1.50 to add bacon and £2.50 for onion rings. On another night I had the dahl curry which again was a ridiculously small portion. I could have eaten it three times over. I always used to leave stuffed to the gills now I leave hungry. I see no point in eating out somewhere that you have to stop in McDonald's on the way home for several burgers to 'top up'. Extremely disappointing. Do better Magpies. Perhaps the management of the Three Magpies could approach the Landlady at The Brewery Inn for some advice.”
