The Lamppost is a coffee shop at Burrs Country Park in Bury, with an ice cream parlour serving over 10 award-winning flavours, both dairy and non-dairy. The ice cream comes in cones. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers mostly stop in after a walk around the park for a hot coffee, with dogs welcome and a roaring fire they call cosy. Diners name a scone, bacon and egg sandwiches on an artisan roll, vanilla ice cream, a homemade sausage roll and a cookie, and several describe friendly staff. Complaints come mainly from families. Two parents say they felt unwelcome with young children, one steered to a table by an open door and left to collect drinks that sat on the counter. Another says a request for one scoop in a tub plus an empty cone for a child with sensory difficulties meant paying the full price of two ice creams, and a friend was told to fill a water bottle from the toilet tap. One diner reports a panini half with no filling, coffees arriving after the food, dirty toilets and long queues, and another says the panini and reduced menu felt thin. A few say the owner's replies to criticism were aggressive. A hen party in the function room praised staff who arranged a last minute alternative menu for a gluten and lactose intolerant guest.

“Well my family and I were considering going here after a walk in the Burrs so I thought I'd check the reviews. It all looked great but then I saw the owners replies to bad reviews. The attitude shown here to people who have had genuine concerns is disgusting. Clearly the owner couldn't care less whether or not you have had a good experience and the number of horrific comments about people's disabilities is unbelievable. We will most definitely *not* be frequenting anywhere that talks to its customers like this no matter how good the food is. Don't bother replying to this as I'm blocking this place so I'll never see whatever undignified diatribe you decide to respond with.”

“I visited this café yesterday with my two children, who both have additional needs, and unfortunately left feeling very disappointed. Both children initially wanted an ice cream, but before I placed the order, my son changed his mind and decided he only wanted the cone because of his sensory difficulties. I asked if I could have one scoop of ice cream served in a tub and an empty cone instead. I was told I'd have to pay for the cone, which I completely understood, but I was then charged £6 – the full price of two ice creams. It turned out I had been charged the full £3 for an empty cone. When a friend later asked about the policy, they were told that if I'd ordered the scoop in a cone and then asked for the ice cream to be put into a tub instead, there would have been no extra charge for the tub. So, a scoop in a tub costs the same as a scoop in a cone, and they'll happily provide a free tub alongside the cone, but they charge the full price for an empty cone. That makes no sense at all. I was also told the staff member could have lost her job if she hadn't charged me this way. If that's true, then the issue lies with the café's policy, not the employee. It shows a complete lack of flexibility or common sense, especially when dealing with families and children with additional needs. To make matters worse, when my friend asked if the staff could fill their water bottle with tap water, they were told to fill it from the tap in the toilet. When they questioned this, they were met with a bad attitude and told it was "the same water." While the water supply may technically be the same, directing customers to fill drinking bottles from a toilet sink is completely unhygienic and unprofessional. It wasn't about the £3 – it was about the principle, the lack of understanding, and the poor customer service throughout. A little compassion and common sense would have gone a long way. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience, and unfortunately, I won't be returning. The owner has replied in what looks like his usual friendly manner. For clarification I was never rude to any member of staff, in fact I barely spoke to the young lady. If she was in tears after we left it was because she was scared of loosing her job (which she told us) which you then said the same the the phone the next morning. You are very unprofessional, nasty man!”
