About Preston's Coffee House

Preston's Coffee House is a coffee shop on a corner at 2 Deansgate in Bolton, housed in the former Prestons of Bolton jewellers building. Chandeliers hang over the seating, so cappuccinos are served beneath them. The drinks list covers espresso and iced matcha, and decaf can be made with soya milk. Toasties come filled with cheese, cheese and turkey, or cheese and tomato, and a counter of cakes sits on display. The chicken is halal. Everything is on one ground-level floor, with the seating spaced out rather than packed together.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the coffee, describing a brilliant Americano, a creamy cup, and a decaf with soya milk that came nice and creamy with a frothy head. Close behind is the setting, called beautiful, stunning, clean and airy, with a calm atmosphere that some say suits working remotely. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and kind, and one reviewer recalls a team member running out to fetch ice for an iced matcha. Food gets mentions too, including homemade hummus with crusty bread, a healthy breakfast with halaal chicken, a kids lunch box and a cinnamon swirl. The main complaint comes from one lunchtime visit, where a single server was slow and unsure about the toasties on the counter sign. The cheese and tomato toastie arrived after the coffee and cake were finished, barely warm with hard cheese in the middle. One vegan reviewer also found no vegan cake on display.

“Very disappointed. We called on a Friday lunchtime and it was very quiet. Only one girl serving who was very slow and struggled to answer any questions. I asked her what flavour toasties they had, as there was a sign on the counter advertising them, but she didn't know they did them and had to go and ask. She informed me that there was; cheese, cheese and turkey or cheese and tomato. I asked her if she was new but she wasn't, she explained that they'd just changed what they serve for Halloween. I ordered cheese and tomato with a coffee and my partner ordered a Cinnamon swirl with a coffee. The coffee's arrived after a few minutes then the Cinnamon swirl after around another 5 minutes but the toastie didn't arrive until after I'd finished my coffee and my partner had finished his coffee and cake. Whenbit arrived it was bearly warm with the cheese still hard in the middle and was very dry. The worst I've ever had. I won't be returning.”

Highlights

“This Coffeehouse, nestled in the heart of Bolton, is a tribute to history and elegance. Set within a landmark historic building, it revives a tradition of serving freshly brewed tea and coffee that once defined the space. Today, it is a vibrant meeting place, where grand chandeliers glow above cappuccinos and the pastry counter has replaced former displays, blending past luxury with present-day warmth and a distinctly British charm.”
