About New China Cottage

New China Cottage is a small Chinese restaurant in Bury, on Bolton St, open Wednesday to Sunday and closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Sunday brings a banquet buffet, and a set Lilac banquet is served table side by the staff, so the meal arrives at the table rather than from a counter. Customer Review Summary

The banquet is the draw reviewers raise most, from a Sunday banquet and Sunday buffet that diners call incredible and fantastic to a lilac banquet whose dishes one reviewer found delicious and well matched. Close behind are the crispy duck pancakes, with a quarter duck described as lean and meaty, and a platter starter and Chicken with Black Beans and Green Peppers also earn compliments. Vegan, veggie and celiac-suitable options come up too, with staff guiding one diner through the celiac choices, and one family of eleven that includes vegetarians holds celebrations here. Service is called friendly and welcoming, and one party's food arrived hot and quickly. The complaints are fewer. One reviewer found the spicy chilli beef bland rather than hot, and the chicken and house special chow mein lacking taste. Another says the small dining room feels intense when a large party is in, and one wished fortune cookies were sold. One reviewer advises booking to be sure of a seat. One diner at the lilac banquet found it far too much for four and ended up eating most of it.

“We think this is the best Chinese restaurant in Bury. We use it for takeaway and to eat in. Lots of food options and all of them have been delicious. Loads of vegan and veggie options. The staff were really helpful to guide my friend through the celiac suitable options. The only niggle is that the restaurant is small and so the atmosphere can sometimes be a bit intense if there is a large party dining. But still our favourite :)”

“We have been going here for over 20 years, under its previous and current names. The food is amazing with great friendly service. The Sunday banquet is incredible but don’t eat for a week before though! We regularly have our family celebrations here and all 11 of us love it (that even includes the veggies) Highly recommended”

“Four of us came for dinner on a Friday evening and had an amazing experience. The food was fresh, hot and delicious and arrived quickly after ordering. Would highly recommend the crispy duck pancakes- lots of meat on the 1/4 duck and was very lean meat. We had great service from start to finish and all staff were very attentive. We would have liked to buy some fortune cookies at the end of the meal but unfortunately they didn’t sell them. In all, we had a lovely meal and will definitely be returning.”
