About Salt and Malt

Salt and Malt is a seafood restaurant in Bristol, at Cargo 2 on Wapping Wharf by the harbourside. Its fish and chips are cooked in a gluten free batter, with haddock and cod on the menu, small or regular portions, and mushy peas alongside. A small plates menu covers raw and cooked British seafood, including mussels marinières in a creamy broth and oysters, and cocktails are on the menu too. Fish is cooked to order, so there can be a wait. Seating is on stools or in a pod area. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips draw the most mentions, with reviewers praising flaky haddock and cod under a crisp, golden batter, and one noting the batter is gluten free as standard. Mussels come close behind, described as fresh and sweet in a creamy parsley broth, and two reviewers single out the mussels marinières. Others enjoyed oysters, mushy peas, curry sauce and a limoncello spritz, and a few mention friendly service and a great view over the harbour. Portions split opinion. One reviewer calls them massive, while others found the fish and the sausage tiny and the prices steep. One found the haddock fishy, another called the fish bland, and a third found it too crunchy. One small order took a long time, and another party was told to leave a dining pod shortly after sitting down because the area was closing for cleaning. Extra sauces cost a little more, one reviewer notes. One diner was charmed by the oyster shell used as a bill holder.

“Had a rare day off with my husband without our daughter and we were really looking forward to a posh chippy for lunch! We both ordered haddock and chips but the haddock tasted really fishy unfortunately, so I don’t think it was that fresh, and the portion was really small - though we did notice the takeaway boxes looked like they had bigger portions. It was also just under £50 for our meals and two soft drinks which felt steep based on the experience.”

“Very disappointing. Took 35 minutes before it was ready for a pretty small order. Fish portion was absolutely tiny. Same for the sausage, also not even a proper chop shop sausage. Chips were nice. Not worth the £23. Overpriced in my opinion”

“Absolutely cracking fish and chips! The food here was exceptionally fresh and delicious. The fish itself was cooked to absolute perfection—beautifully flaky on the inside with a properly crisp, golden batter on the outside. The portions are massive and incredibly filling, so you definitely won't leave hungry! They offer a brilliant selection of sauces to suit everyone's taste (do note that the extra sauces come with a small additional charge, but they are well worth it to complete the meal). For me, the absolute best part is the location. It’s situated right at Wapping Wharf, meaning you can easily grab your takeaway box, find a spot sitting right by the harbourside, and enjoy a proper British classic while looking out over the water. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Bristol!”

“Visited in peak busy time. Wanted to sit down and dine in there pod with my dog and family in the shade, was told that’s ok and to go in, went and sat down and told they are closing the area to clean so has to get up and leave. Which is such a shame as wanted a meal so had to settle for small takeaway order and eat in the streets instead. Chips were good and curry sauce was good.”

“Had takeaway small cod and chips on a trip down to Bristol in March. Fish was freshly cooked to order, so there was a bit of a wait, but that's a positive point as far as I'm concerned. The food was gluten free as standard. It was quite expensive (maybe that's because of the area it's in, I don't know) but it was tasty and well cooked.”
