Customer Review Summary
Seafood draws the warmest praise, with one diner calling the squid and the stone bass with samphire cooked to perfection and another singling out king scallops and calamari. Close behind are a hazelnut chocolate bomb dessert, an afternoon tea with fresh pastries that seemed made in-house, and a vegan menu called delicious. Reviewers also like the decor and describe staff as friendly and lovely to deal with, though slow. The recurring complaint is order accuracy. Starters were forgotten, mussels were confirmed and then withdrawn after a long wait, and fish and chips was unavailable after ordering. One main arrived with heavy mayonnaise, a side of root vegetables was called poor, the fregola with the bream had no seasoning, and an offered starter discount had to be requested at the bill. One reviewer reports a nearly raw tiger prawn in the surf and turf, and says the manager apologised and reduced the bill.

“I very rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience on Sunday 5 July 2026 was one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I have had in many years. Unfortunately, almost everything that could go wrong did. We initially ordered the mussels after the waitress confirmed they were available. After waiting around 30 minutes, we were informed they were no longer available. We then changed our order to a large smoked salmon starter to share. Around 15 minutes later, the waitress brought us a salmon fillet main course instead. It felt as though the order had not been recorded correctly. As our main courses were ready, we decided to cancel the starter. I ordered the surf and turf with tiger prawns. On the very first prawn I bit into, it was virtually raw. This is simply unacceptable, particularly in a luxury hotel restaurant, and could easily have resulted in food poisoning. To their credit, the restaurant manager, Michael, dealt with the situation professionally. He apologised sincerely and reduced the bill, which I appreciated. We paid for the meal we had eaten and left. However, this experience highlighted serious issues with both service and food quality. The waiting staff and kitchen team would benefit from additional training to improve order accuracy, communication and, most importantly, food safety. I sincerely hope the restaurant addresses these issues, as the standards experienced on this occasion fell well below what I would expect from a hotel of this calibre.”

“Our first time visiting after reading such positive reviews and it did not disappoint. “Was looking forward to eating here but unfortunately left quite disappointed. The food in general was fine, not noteworthy but good enough. Service was a litany of errors. Staff were really polite but not efficient and simple requests took multiple attempts and much longer than they should. Starters were forgotten. One main came not as requested and with an additional ingredient not mentioned on menu (LOTS of mayonnaise all over it which we dislike). We ordered a side of root veg for £6 and how anyone sent it out without feeling ashamed I do not know. We were offered 25% off starters for the error and this wasnt put onto the bill so we had to request it. Restaurant was half empty so not a busy night. Hotel has obviously had a huge amount spent on it so its very disappointing the Restaurant didnt match up.”

“I booked this restaurant as a treat for my friends 60th birthday. She travelled down from Birmingham and met me here in Devon. We then drove to Padstow for lunch. The reason I took her here is it looked so pretty and her favourite is fish and chips and this restaurant is called The Harbour Kitchen. Fish and chips was on the menu but after ordering we were told that they didn’t have any fish and chips. Crestfallen that my treat for my friends 60th didn’t happen and that the service was so slow. She ordered a burger which really wasn’t the best. My dogs liked it though. Beautiful venue, disappointing experience.”
