Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return for the fish and chips, with a large haddock described as fresh, thick and flaky under a tasty batter, and cod and chips cooked to order and piping hot on a busy Friday night. The friendly owner and staff come up close behind, along with chatty regulars and a shop several call clean. The sauces have their own fans: one reviewer calls the curry sauce the best they have had anywhere, and another says the gravy keeps them coming back. A meatball in gravy and a Scotch egg also get praise. The complaints are specific. One reviewer describes cod that looked reheated from the lunch hour, chips with black bits caked on and a powdery curry sauce. Another found the cod smaller than at a local rival and questioned the price. A third noted slightly doughy batter in a couple of spots, and one mentions tricky parking when it is busy. Pea fritters and a slice of lemon on the side round out what diners mention.

“I arrived at Argus a few minutes before opening, but was welcomed inside to wait while the final preparations were made. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with staff who clearly enjoyed what they were doing, and the banter was excellent. I ordered the large haddock, which was a lovely piece of fish, fresh, thick and flaky, coated in a tasty batter, though slightly doughy in a couple of spots. The slice of lemon was a nice touch. My wife thought the particular meatball in gravy was delicious, and although they are not my thing, I could see the quality. The sauce was thick and beefy, and the chips were plentiful and crispy. The Scotch egg was perfectly structured and delicious. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit, not just for the food, but for the friendly staff and chatty locals. 🟠 Cooking in: Oil 🟠 Payment: Cash or Card 🟠 Hygiene Rating: 5 🟠 Fish Reviewed: Large Haddock 🎥 See the full video review on The Chippy Tour YouTube channel”
