Quick info
About Woodes
Woodes is an independent cafe on Park Street in Bristol that opened in 1966 and takes walk-ins. Breakfast runs until 11am, and the menu includes a bacon sandwich, toasties and other sandwiches, with lattes to drink. Sandwiches can sell out. Carrot cake is also on the menu. The wooden seating resembles church pews, and a second seating area is upstairs. The decor is retro and old-timey, and the room plays no background music.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is what most reviewers come for, from steaming lattes to a blended iced americano, though one says it is not artisan level and another found it not as strong as they like. Carrot cake is mentioned twice, with a moist blueberry muffin and a bacon sandwich also praised, and reviewers call the pastries cheap and the prices reasonable. The old timey, retro decor is the other draw, with wooden seating likened to church pews and a quiet upstairs area, though one reviewer finds the layout no frills. Staff are often called friendly, but a one-star review describes a down card machine, no coins for change, one of two ordered coffees delivered, no white bread, a toastie missing brown sauce and no apology. Another reviewer reports a manager calling a staff member stupid in front of customers. One suggests being quick, since sandwiches sell out and breakfast ends at 11am.

“Timeless cafe with simply wonderful food and atmosphere. Be quick or sandwiches will be sold out. Breakfast (simply divine) sold till 11am. Lovely coffee and just serene vibe that can loose yourself in the history of the building, paintings and hideout from busy Park Street.”

“Such a bad service. Card machine, not working so only accepting cash. Not an issue until they have no coins and were unable to give customers their full change. No white bread left. We ordered 2 coffees, they only gave us 1. After we raised the issue there wasn't so much as an apology. When toasties finally arrived there was definitely no service with a smile. Also one was lacking the brown sauce! Such a bad service not worth 4.4 stars. Staff disinterested.”

“This place has been here for decades I suspect I’ve been coming here on and off for at least 18years since a friend of mine who grew up here introduced me to it - I’ve always loved the bacon sandwich and steaming lattes there’s nothing quite like it anywhere in Bristol - yes the layout although pleasant enough is no frills and maybe a bit basic - but it’s somewhere to pass through ruminate on life and look out the window quietly - if the mood takes you. Bristol is an amazing city with many foodie places , all with different vibes - some have soundtracks in the background this one doesnt but that’s ok - all these places are often in close proximity to each other so many of them (not all) but a lot of them are semi independent places in these never ending turbulent times they need custom Im happy to spread the love and come here some days as well maybe you will to - cheers !”

“The staff were lovely and friendly, unfortunately the manager (or owner?) feels it appropriate to use his position to bully his staff. He was calling one of them stupid and telling them "its this simple" in front of customers. I felt embarrassed to be witnessing this behaviour in 2025.”

“Lovely quiet cafe, the pastry were extremely cheap for what I was expecting but I had a blueberry muffin and it was moist and very flavorful, delicious little snack to start my day. My partner had a slice of carrot cake and a latte.”
