About Spicer & Cole

Spicer & Cole is an independent cafe on Counterslip in Bristol, with toasted sourdough sandwiches at the heart of the menu, filled with halloumi, smoked tofu, or cheese and leek. Granola comes with yogurt and fresh berries. The coffee list includes flat white and a mocha that is also made decaf and iced. Savouries and salads sit alongside the sandwiches for a fuller lunch, and the cafe also bakes cakes for something sweet.

Customer Review Summary

Sandwiches draw the most praise, with reviewers calling them simple but delicious, from the toasted sourdough Abbots Leigh Halloumi Sandwich and Smoked Tofu Sandwich to a filling falafel salad wrap. Close behind are the granola with yogurt and fresh berries, the Swedish oat ball, banana bread, a pistachio blondie, and oat milk flat whites or iced mochas, though one regular found the granola slightly chewy this time. Several describe a nice atmosphere, and one mentions the music during a relaxing wait. The recurring complaint is the counter service. Three reviewers describe an unfriendly welcome or made-to-feel-impertinent exchange. One said the coffee was undrinkable and the cheese and leek sandwich grainy with an odd taste, and the person at the counter then questioned how it could taste bad. Another was told there were no gluten free options despite what the website suggested, because the seasonal menu had changed. One regular suggests arriving before 1 pm, since items sell out quickly and are not refilled.

“I had one of my regular Granola with Yogurt. The best part is fresh berries and crunchy Granola. However, this time it was slightly chewy which was disappointing. But overall, it was nice.”

“Good food and coffee including fresh salads. It is a popular lunch venue and is now open at weekends. I also very much appreciate dogs are not welcome inside. Not everyone loves to be surrounded by dogs...”

“We came here twice during our stay in Bristol, due to the Cafe being close to our hotel. It's a great pleace to grab something quick to eat, or a dessert or coffee. Both times we came for breakfast. The first time we dined in we had the Abbots Leigh Halloumi Sandwich and the Smoked Tofu Sandwich. Each sourdough toasted Sandwhich was very tasty. Good flavors and a pretty good sourdough bread. Afterwards we had a powerball and pistachio blondie - both yummy too. The second time we grabbed the porridge to-go, for our ride home. Sadly the service was passive und unfriendly on both visits. We both felt not welcome by the lady at the counter and weren't sure at first if she was just having a bad day or if she is actually that unwelcoming. But reading from the other reviews on here this seems to be a common occurrence. How has the service been so bad since years and nothing has been done about it?”

“I am a regular customer on my way to work. I normally go for Swedish Oat Ball and Granola. Today, I was wondering around and wanted to try coffee. I had Banana Bread and Mocha decaf. As always, good quality food and nice atmosphere. It was unexpectedly quiet, maybe because it is Saturday and about to close. If you want options to select your food then I would recommend to go early than 1 pm. Some items sold out quickly and there is no refill. 😋”

“No Gluten Free options despite Ceoliac UK rating on website. We were informed the seasonal menu had since changed and they only worked by buffet and cannot limit cross contamination. We were also made to feel impertinent for asking the simple question. Incredibly disappointed, we ordered coffees but rather wish we hadn't in hind sight.”
