About Freshly Ground

A salad bar sits alongside the sandwiches, cakes and coffees at Freshly Ground, a cafe and coffee shop on Badminton Road in Bristol, giving customers the option of a lighter plate or a small salad served as a side with a main. Sandwiches carry the food side of the menu, with fillings including tuna and sausage, while the counter also holds cakes and muffins for anyone stopping in for something sweet. Coffee runs to cappuccinos, including flavoured versions such as hazelnut with a good helping of syrup. There is no booking here, so orders are placed at the counter and tables are taken as they come free. Outdoor seating gives customers somewhere to eat outside, high chairs make the room workable for families with young children, and the step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs. The doors open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Coffee draws the most consistent praise, with reviewers singling out an oat latte served in a tall glass, a hazelnut cappuccino one visitor credits with a generous helping of syrup rather than the scrimping found elsewhere, and a hot chocolate that won over a self described stern critic despite being a touch sweet. Close behind is the food, described in specifics: tuna sandwiches on soft white bread with crisps and salad, a baked potato with chilli con carne, lasagne and fresh burgers, an English breakfast called beautifully presented, plus pistachio cake, a large chocolate muffin and a salad bar one regular says they love. Several describe the staff as friendly and helpful without being overbearing, and one recounts a coffee cautious customer being talked through the options without condescension. Minor grumbles are few: one reviewer found it slightly overpriced though still worth it for the cosy, home feeling, and another wished the sausage sandwich came with a side. One couple recalls being welcomed in for a seat just before closing.

“Wonderful. Had two very hyper children with me who were nonetheless not made to feel like a nuisance. Tuna sandwiches were divine, super soft white bread, generous portion, tasty good quality crisps and salad. My father loved his baked potato with chilli con carne, my daughter's sausage sandwich looked great - could have come with some salad or peas or something as every other main seems to have a little healthy side. My tuna salad was excellent, fresh and tasty. Oat latte was delicious, served in a tall elegant glass which I'd rather have in a coffee cup but that is my preference as I am clumsy and more likely to spill from a tall glass! Pistachio cake was gorgeous, massive chocolate muffin was also delicious. Will definitely be returning. Impressed!”
