About The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer

The drinks list runs to 36 beer and cider lines on rotation, with local breweries, cask drinks and 0% IPAs among them, and a wall of cards at the bar shows what is on. The pub is open daily, and the kitchen cooks seven days a week. The Sunday roast comes with a meat trio option of beef, lamb and pork. Inside, seating is split between a room behind the bar and more space at the back, and two function rooms can be hired for groups. Quiz nights run here too. Game nights are held occasionally, with advance registration required and no walk-ins accepted for the games.

Customer Review Summary
The Sunday roast is what most reviewers return to, praised as consistently delicious with good portions, and one diner calls the Ultimate Meat Fest Trio of beef, lamb and pork an incredible taste. Close behind is the beer selection, where reviewers mention a wide range of local options, cask drinks, cider and a few 0% IPAs. The King Street setting is described as lively in good weather, cosy during the week and busy at weekends, and one parent notes a high chair was ready on request. The complaints are specific. One reviewer reports a strong smell of sewage and a lot of flies at the bar, though staff were apologetic. Another says a pint full of sediment was met with a dismissive claim that it was meant to be that way, and one finds rounds pricier than expected. Several praise bar staff who stop restocking or cleaning to serve the moment a queue forms.

“Rude staff completely ruined it. Served a pint full of sediment and told it was supposed to be like that in a very couldn’t give a…. attitude. Better pubs with better beer and better service just a few yards away”

“Nice little spot, however upon going up to the bar to order there was quite a strong smell of sewage and an awful lot of flies…staff were very apologetic when I brought it up and assured me that the place was clean however I won’t be returning in a hurry. I would advise management to fix this issue as it’s very off putting! Nobody wants to drink or eat anywhere that smells like sewage and has more flies than a crime scene!”

“In search of a chill evening in Bristol, I came here and enjoyed a satisfying pint in honour of the volunteer from whom the pub takes its name. It seemed only fitting. The staff were warm and welcoming, the atmosphere pretty calm, and the whole place felt refreshingly unhurried. The prices were reasonable too, making it an ideal spot to linger for a while and enjoy the evening at its own pace.”
