Quick info
About Alcampo Lounge
On London Road in Brighton, Alcampo Lounge is a café-bar restaurant at 84-86 London Rd, part of the Loungers chain. Tuesday is tapas night, and an open mic evening brings live acts with easy listening music in the background. Board games sit alongside the food and drink, which gives the large room a reason to linger over a coffee, a beer or a glass of wine. The menu covers café meals, with a soup and toastie deal, and iced coffee and milkshakes among the drinks. A gluten-free menu is available, and the kitchen takes care over allergies. The interior has a bohemian look. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Tapas is what reviewers reach for most, with the shared selection described as very nice and a lot of options for everyone. Close behind is the gluten-free menu, which two diners single out, one pairing a Mediterranean mixed grill with a passion fruit semifreddo. Others praise the soup, the iced coffee and an espresso with a fruity flavour. Several describe friendly staff and a relaxed, laid back atmosphere, and one mentions a book swap, a laptop area and a small play area for kids. Care with allergies and a welcome for a dog also come up. The complaints centre on the food. One reviewer found the chicken strips not fresh, with batter tasting like an old grill, and a cookie dough milkshake watery. Another called the toastie portion very small. A third found the burger fine but the place without an identity, with walls that wobbled when leaned on. One table who came for tapas Tuesday also caught an open mic night and called the acts brilliant.

“A large restaurant that doesn't really have an identity. I'm not sure if it is a pub/bar that sells food or a restaurant that tries to also cater for people out for a drink. The building looks like they have put false walls in a warehouse as they wobbled when leaned against. Had a burger and chips which were not bad at all so can't grumble there but a big part of going out to eat for me is the atmosphere of a place and this just missed the point in my opinion. Then again maybe that is just me and I missed the aim. Many better places to eat in and around London Road.”

“El Campo Lounge in Brighton was excellent from start to finish. The service was friendly and efficient, the food was really good, the gluten-free menu was a big plus, and even the toilets were clean and well looked after - which always says something about a place. What genuinely surprised me was the overall rating. I looked them up expecting it to be higher, because our experience was consistently good across the board. After reading some of the reviews, I was more confused - people who seemed completely happy with the place and then still gave it only three stars, which seemed odd. I'd recommend El Campo Lounge and would definitely go back.”

“I usually have good experiences here, but recently the food was disappointing. Chicken strips tasted not fresh and the batter tasted like it had been cooked on an old grill. Cookie dough Milkshake was super watery and didn’t taste of anything apart from pure whole milk, no hints of cookie dough or even ice cream. The service was really great and atmosphere. Just bad food.”

“Overall: 82//100pts The cafe/lounge has a huge, spacious interior with a very relaxed atmosphere. I really liked the second-hand book swap and the separate laptop friendly area with WiFi and charging spots. Also there was a small play area for kids. It gives the place a unique and welcoming vibe. The counter felt a bit crowded and the coffee machine looked a slightly worn, but it was maintained. The espresso was quite good, enjoyable with a fruity flavor and pleasant aroma. The crema was on the thinner side but still balanced, and overall the coffee was well made. Overall, great place to relax, work or enjoy a coffee in a comfortable environment.
