About Tiwani Bar & Restaurant
Tiwani Bar & Restaurant brings West and Central African cooking to Derby Street in Bolton, with fumbwa, ocazi leaves with peanut butter, sitting on the menu alongside egusi and banga soup for diners after dishes that are hard to find locally. The kitchen works across a wide range, and sides anchor the plates, with pounded yam offered in a small portion as well as a larger one and plain white rice available. Curry goat and a beef stew of chunks of beef in a tomato-based sauce with onions round out the mains, and plantain appears as an accompaniment. Booking ahead is advised. The dining space plays African music while the kitchen serves daily. Anyone eating off site can collect a takeaway or order for delivery through Just Eat. The business also trades as an African goods shop.

Customer Review Summary
Beef stew draws the most comment, praised by one regular who says they crave it and can't stop ordering, though the same reviewers ask for vegetables in it, smaller meat chunks and note the beef can be tough, with one suggesting it works best alongside a side of rice. Close behind sits the pounded yam, called soft and generous even in the small portion, paired variously with oxtail stew (mikila), Banga soup and a creamy Fumbwa. Others single out the Taba as tasting like childhood, the crispy spicy chicken wings and a very generous plantain portion, while one found the Egusi soup chewy and heavy on tripe. The complaints are real and specific: two describe disappointing orders, one a plate of white rice with steak and onions and no proper stew, another a delivery of tasteless curried goat with dry rice and beef that tasted only of herbs. Warm, welcoming staff and African music recur throughout, along with takeaway food that arrived fast and carefully wrapped.

“The beef stew is so good, I can’t stop ordering it and crave it all the time. It would be improved with some vegetables and the meat can sometimes be a little too tough, but apart from that it’s great. The spicy chicken wings are good too, crispy and flavourful. The pounded yam is good and even the small is a decent portion. Love this place!”

“Tropical Cafe is such a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere where you can enjoy delicious food and listen to all the music from Africa and allover the world. Lovely and very welcoming staff”

“The beef stew isn't what I expected beef stew to be. It's just beef in a like tomato sauce, although the delicious taste. The stew would go better if it had some vegetables in the meat and if the meat chunks were to be a little small. Aside from that, the stew slaps if you have a side of rice to go with it.”

“I see quite a few people have negative 1* reviews but my takeaway experience was outstanding!! The food was out of this world literally, the pounded yam nice and soft, Banga Soup was just mouthwatering, every bite just made me want more! And the Taba (don't get me started) I used to have Taba as a kid and throughout my years never found a place that made Taba the way this one place made it when I was young... Tried this place for my birthday and the Taba was spot on like they were the ones that made it when I was little... 100/10 - seriously.”
