About Istanbul Shawarma

Istanbul Shawarma is a Turkish restaurant at 136 Derby St in Bolton, open daily. The kitchen roasts its meat on rotating spits over a real fire, and the naan is made in-house. The chicken shawarma comes wrapped in that naan with donner meat inside, and lamb, chicken or a mix of the two is also on the menu. Plates of chicken shawarma come with chips fried fresh when ordered, plus a salad where diners choose which items go in. Payment is cash only, so bring notes to the counter.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often return to the chicken shawarma, described as juicy, fresh and wrapped in soft naan that one reviewer says is made in house. Close behind are the salads, which reviewers call fresh, and chips fried to order. One diner praised a mixed lamb and chicken plate with mayo sauce. Staff are called friendly, and several describe the shop as clean, with prices they find cheap. The most repeated complaint is meat quantity: two reviewers wish the wraps held more donner, though another calls the chicken wrap huge. Lamb draws a split. One diner found it had no taste or smell at all, while another praised it as the best lamb in a while. One reviewer says the seating area and washroom could be cleaner, and two mention that the shop is cash only, with one wishing cards were accepted. The sharpest account comes from a family who say a chef became defensive when they asked to pay for a small extra portion of chicken for their child, and they do not plan to return.

“Delicious and huge chicken shawarma for £4.50, friendly staff, ample seating, a gorgeous shawarma restaurant in the centre of Bolton. Be aware it is cash only though. Thank you!”

“We visited with family and spent over £70 on our meal after driving 20 minutes to get here. Towards the end of the meal, my child asked for a little more shawarma chicken to feel full. I went to the chef and politely requested a small extra portion of chicken, clearly stating that I would pay for it. Instead of simply helping, the chef became defensive and started explaining that I would need to order a full £7 portion. I had never asked for anything free — I only wanted a small amount and was ready to pay. His reaction made it feel as if I was trying to get free food, which was unnecessary and quite upsetting. It left a very bad impression. We felt the focus was more on taking money than looking after the customer’s simple request. After spending a good amount and making the effort to come, this experience was disappointing enough that we will not return. Hoping the owner takes note of how customers are treated.”

“The lamb shawarma had no taste or smell at all. The portion size and price were reasonable, but the meat's flavor and deliciousness were not noticeable at all. I've eaten a lot of lamb and shawarma before, and this was definitely one of the worst.”

“Tried this Middle Eastern shawarma spot recently and overall had a really good experience. The food quality is definitely the highlight — everything tasted fresh, from the meat to the salads, and you can tell they maintain good hygiene standards. The shawarma comes wrapped in naan with donner inside, and while the portion size is decent, the amount of meat could be a bit more. That said, what they do serve is well-prepared and flavourful. Service was smooth, and the place feels clean and well-kept, which always makes a difference. Overall, a solid choice if you’re after fresh, tasty shawarma with good quality ingredients. Just a slight improvement in meat quantity would make it even better.”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐ Istanbul Shawarma in Bolton serves really tasty food and the flavours are excellent. The shawarma and other items are fresh, well prepared and full of flavour, which makes it a great place if you’re looking for good Middle Eastern style food. The food quality is definitely the highlight and very enjoyable. One area that could be improved slightly is the seating area and the washroom facilities, which could be kept a bit cleaner. Aside from that, the food itself is amazing and worth trying if you’re in the area. Overall a good place to eat and I would visit again.”
