Quick info
About Hamstead Fish Bar
On Old Walsall Rd in Birmingham, Hamstead Fish Bar is a fish and chips takeaway that prepares orders behind a service counter, with food made in front of customers. Alongside the standard fish and chips, the menu runs to masala fish, doner kebabs, chicken, pies, and a veggie burger, with mushy peas available and a mini fish and chips or small fish option for smaller appetites. Payment is taken at the counter and it works on a walk-in basis, with no table seating on site. High chairs are available for families with young children eating in for collection. The shop opens Monday to Saturday and closes on Sundays. Queues can build up, particularly on Friday evenings, so allowing extra time at busier periods is worth factoring in.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips draw the most praise, with reviewers pointing to the mini fish and chips and a large fish and chips as fresh, flaky and generously portioned, with a crispy batter and chips that are not greasy. Close behind are the kebabs and doner meat and chips, plus the masala fish and mushy peas, and several reviewers describe friendly staff who keep up with long Friday evening queues. Complaints are substantial, though. Several describe food that tasted undercooked or had gone downhill after years of visiting, including undercooked fish and poor chips. One reviewer found chips dry and shrivelled, a pie microwaved and lukewarm food, and mentions staff without head coverings. Another received a microwaved naan around a kebab and a poor masala fish. A regular describes being told to pay before the food was prepared and getting a small portion of chips compared with a previous large one. One lunchtime kebab was grease soaked and uneatable, and one reviewer felt a small portion was poor for the price.

“I've been coming here for quite a while, but I won't be returning. The customer service has been consistently poor. On more than one occasion I've been told to pay before my food was even prepared, and another time I was repeatedly told to pay while I was still on the phone, in a rude and impatient manner. Every visit leaves me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. The portions are also inconsistent. Today I ordered chicken and chips and was given a small portion of chips, even though I've previously received a large portion with the same meal. It seems to depend on who's serving rather than there being any consistent standard. The quality of the fish has also gone downhill compared to when I first started visiting. Overall, it's disappointing. As a regular customer I expected better service and consistency, but instead I've had repeated negative experiences. There are plenty of other fish and chip shops that value their customers, so I'll be taking my business elsewhere.”

“Ordered mini fish and small chips . A chicken and mushroom pie . Chips were dry and shrivelled up . Been left lying around far too long . The fish was the same . The pie was microwaved to oblivian . No "hot" food was above 63oC safe holding temp for safe consumption . Staff looked hard done by even though service was quiet (not busy) no hair nets/head covering . They are clearly trying to save money by keeping waste to a minimum hence the dry tepid food which has been held too long . If you are the owner at least instill some confidence in your customers . As word of mouth is the best seller . Or sell up and give the potential to someone who respects a true fresh fish n' chip shop experience ! I do NOT recommend anyone to eat from this clearly unconcerened facility , as calling this a chip shop is a slap in the face to any self respecting customer(s) Gordon Ramsey would have a field day in this place ! Stay away please !!!”

“Quality of food just gets worse everytime I pick up food from this place. As you can see from the pictures, the majority of my chips were moul dy. I picked out at least 6-10 edible chips.”
