Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the Kurdish grilled meat, naming the lamb chops and kofta kebabs as tender, juicy and well seasoned, with the yaprak and baby chicken also singled out as full of flavour. Several call the portions generous and the value very good, and friendly, welcoming staff come up repeatedly, along with fresh traditional bread, hummus and the desserts. The critical reviews are pointed, though. One diner reports waiting around 35 minutes for a menu after being asked to change tables, while other families were served first. Another describes dry, tasteless chicken, an old salad, a long wait for plates to be cleared, tea served in an espresso cup, and a cashier on the phone during payment. A separate reviewer found the portions small for the price and the food overcooked. Happier diners mention a free bowl of lentil soup on arrival and complimentary tea at the end of the meal.

“I recently visited Awa Restaurant on Rookery Road in Birmingham, and I was genuinely impressed. The grilled lamb chops were absolutely outstanding—perfectly seasoned, tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The kofta kebabs were equally delicious, packed with authentic flavour and beautifully grilled. What really stood out was the incredible value for money. The portion sizes were generous, the quality of the food was excellent, and the prices were very affordable. The staff were friendly and welcoming, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere from the moment we arrived. If you're looking for authentic, tasty grilled food in Birmingham, Awa Restaurant is definitely worth a visit. The lamb chops and kofta kebabs are among the best I've had, and I'll certainly be returning. Highly recommended!”

“We ordered a variety, but the chicken was very dry and tasteless. Additionally, the salad wasn't fresh; it was an old salad that came with the dishes. The service was very poor, after we had lunch, we waited for around 15 to 20 minutes. No one came to check on us or move the plates until we asked one of the staff members to bring two teas (but we received a tea in the espresso shot). This was shocking, but other customers around us were receiving it in much bigger teacups. We couldn't understand why. Even when we made the payment, the lady on the cashier was on the phone and didn't have any customer service experience and was not respectful to the customer. ( which she should have respected the customer and paid full attention rather than being on the phone while serving). We drove three hours to get there as we were told it is a nice place with nice food but shame we didn't experience that at all. And the customer service was unbelievably shocking. We would never go back there again.”

“Absolutely unacceptable experience. 😡 When we arrived, the staff asked us to move tables because a large family was coming. Out of respect, we agreed without any complaint. Unfortunately, that was the beginning of a terrible experience. After moving, we waited approximately 35 minutes just to receive a menu or have someone acknowledge us. During that time, multiple other families who arrived around the same time—or even after us—were served and attended to while we were completely ignored. What made this even more frustrating was the apparent lack of any fair queue system. It felt as though certain customers were being prioritized while we were forgotten entirely. Whether this was because staff knew those customers personally or simply poor management, the result was the same: disrespectful and unprofessional service. No customer should be asked to change tables as a favor to the restaurant and then be left waiting for over half an hour without basic attention. We showed patience and courtesy, but received neither in return. This was one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I've had. The food may be good, but service like this completely ruins the experience. I cannot recommend a place that treats customers this way, and I will not be returning.”
