About Boar's Head World Buffet

Boar's Head World Buffet is a buffet restaurant at 340 Aldridge Rd in Birmingham, with a tree standing in the middle of the dining room. Food is self-serve from stations covering Chinese dishes, curries, pizza and a carvery. A chef runs a grill station where steak is cooked, which gives the buffet a hot item beyond the self-serve trays. The Indian section includes mini samosas, peshwari naan and butter chicken. Dessert comes from an ice cream machine and a selection of sweets. Drinks are the one part of the meal handled by table service, and fizzy drinks such as Pepsi arrive in pitchers ordered at the table. The team also clears empty plates from tables during the meal.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the range of food, with curries, Chinese dishes, pizza and a carvery under one roof, and several say there is something for everyone. Ice cream and the toffee pudding draw the most dessert praise, and the peshwari naan and sheek kebab get a mention too. The caveats recur and carry weight. Several feel quality has slipped while prices have risen, citing extremely dry Chinese chicken wings, bland noodles, an overly spicy Chinese dish, and a butter chicken tray down to one piece of chicken with cold curries. Missing chips and trays that were not refilled come up, as do the lack of a refill soft drinks machine and pricey, weakly flavoured drink pitchers. Service splits. Some found staff friendly and quick, while others saw staff on their phones and waited on drinks, and one found the rules around steak strict. A few mention loud children running between tables. Even happier diners note staff clearing empty plates almost constantly, and one found it a bit much.

“The food was average. The Chinese food was very spicy and we couldn’t finish it. It wasn’t like that in the past. The Indian food was ok. There was no chips and a lot other things, and there was no one refilling the food. The best part was the ice cream, delicious. It was always my first choice of bufet restaurant, unfortunately not anymore. Also it was very loud with kids constantly screaming and running between tables. I won’t be returning any time soon.”

“My partner had been craving a Chinese buffet, and against my better judgement, we agreed to come here for dinner. First impressions were good- the restaurant seemed clean, nice atmosphere and well decorated. We were seated quickly, and I thought that my prejudice was unfounded, but this is where things started to go downhill. Our waiter asked what we wanted to drink, at the lowest decibel humanely possible, and 10 seconds later after I understood what he said and began to answer, he walked away, leaving me talking to myself. He came back 2 minutes later and took our drinks order, which were delivered promptly. My partner went to the Chinese section, and I went to the curries, The butter chicken had one piece of chicken left in the whole tray, so I had some of the sauce and rice, as well as poppadom's and 2 mini samosa. I sat down and began eating- it tasted fine, but was noticeably cold. My partner said he enjoyed most of the Chinese options, but the noodles were bland and the chicken was "bouncy". As I was about to bite into my second mini samosa, I noticed a black wiry hair. My partner is bald- I have light colored hair that was tightly slicked back into a ponytail. I had already picked one hair off my plate at this point, and this tipped me over the edge. I had half a plate of food and was put off the rest of the mains. We went to check out the desserts and there weren't many options left. We went to pay and the server who we complained about the hair to was behind the bar. We explained that the hair had put me off so I had half a plate at an all you can eat buffet, and we weren't prepared to pay £20pp. He explained in the lowest voice possible that he didn't believe it came from staff (who don't wear hair or beard nets) but possibly from another customer. He offered no apology, but instead looked at us with a bemused and vacant expression, and we could tell he didn't really want to comp us. After staring blankly for a minute or two at us, he decided to comp my plate. We were very appreciative of this and apologised profusely, as we rarely complain, only to again be met by a vacant stare. We left still hungry and laughed in the taxi on the way home at how bad it was. Safe to say I have reminded my partner of how bad buffets usually are, and we would not recommend or visit again”

“Food was ok, not a great variety at all. Pizza and nuggets very cheap, Chinese chicken wings were extremely dry. Also to add, the table next to us were Indians (not that this matters but for context it does), they went up for steak, chef cooked it and rang the bell and called over a waiter to take the steak to their table. We went up for steak but had to collect it ourselves from the chef/grill station which I found quite odd and quite rude. Prices also need updating, there is no refill drinks machine as advertised and the prices for fizzy pop pitchers aren’t the same as the prices on the menu. Per pitcher was £8.98 for Pepsi max and £9.50 for Pepsi which is rather expensive considering there is probably less than a 1.5 bottle of Pepsi in each pitcher. I can say, the male waiter with the blonde hair was extremely friendly and helpful and did everything to help as he could, we wished we could’ve left a tip but wasn’t sure on how to do this. All in all, we probably wouldn’t return here.”

“This place is ok. However for the choice of food it is overpriced. Most of the staff are continously on their phones giving a slow service. We ordered drinks when we were sat, we we pretty much near the end of our first plate of food we asked if it would be quicker to fetch it ourselves. We did enjoy the food but there are other places we have been which is better value for money. There is no refil soft drinks machine. The food station opposite the entrance was good and one of the only members of staff not seen on their phone. I would reccomend this place if money is not an object and you are happy to get your own drinks. The food was nice. Ice cream machine was a hit and the toffee pudding. We were offered a loyalty card which we declined. We would only eat here rarely so not needed. The pitchers of drink while acceptable could do with a little more flavour.”

“Great visit. We wanted a buffet near to Drayton manor theme park, the Boar popped up and came along. The food was great and the service and cleanup from the staff was on point! Sat here in the restaurant reviewing it after telling one of the staff. Tidying away and general attentiveness was spot on. Great place, if in the area again. Safiya was nearby to help when we needed. Even to find out whether the tree in the middle of the room was real or not. Rightly so it wasn't otherwise the leaves would have been a pain to clean up. 🤣 great place to eat. We were two adults and a 6 year old.”
