About Brittania Fish Bar

Bring cash to Brittania Fish Bar, a fish and chips takeaway on Hob Moor Rd in the Alum Rock area of Birmingham, where the counter takes no cards at all. Orders are placed in person, with no booking involved, and the shop trades daily. Fish and chips anchors the menu, and the large fish and chips comes with a big piece of fish, while scallops go out regularly alongside it. Chips arrive in large portions and pair with most of the order. The kitchen reaches well past the fryer range too, taking in doner and kebab plates, fried chicken and nuggets, and pizza that runs up to a 16 inch size. Curry sauce, battered sausage and a cheeseburger fill out the rest of the board. High chairs are available for families with young children waiting on an order to take home.

Customer Review Summary

Generous portions at low prices anchor the praise, with the large fish and chips so oversized that regulars call it whale and chips, and the sixteen inch pizza singled out by one reviewer as the best takeaway pizza they have had, cheese crust included. Scallops, crunchy fried chicken, the mixed kebab and the charred chicken donner also draw approval, and several mention quick, efficient service and friendly counter staff. Consistency is the recurring sticking point: one visitor found the fish chewy and dry inside and abandoned the chips over bits left from earlier frying, another got fried chicken that came burnt and tasting long cooked, and one reports a dirty shop and food that did not seem fresh. Two describe a single member of counter staff as rude and snarky and prone to mixing up orders, one saying the error was not put right when it still easily could have been, and another lowered their rating after driving a mile to find cash.

“Terrible service from the chap with weird eyes behind the counter, he has been constantly and consistently rude, passive aggressive and snarky whenever I have visited, making sly comments and sometimes overt ones such as 'you look like a bafoon' - to couple this, he has very poor english, both in speaking and lidtening comprehension, as he constantly messes up orders; read other comments and you will see this is the case there too. It really is a shame as the other men and woman in this shop have been nothing but lovely with good/strong skills in English and customer service. The food is hit or miss, if anyone other than the big eyed looking guy is working, the food and service is amazing, if the bug eyed guy is working, the food and service is terrible. I have made the decision to never return here after being REPEATEDLY verbally harassed by the weird looking guy - it's a shame. He is working close to 80% of the time, and whenever he works, expect to have at least one thing wrong with your order, from ill prepared food, to missing items or inacurate orders. Not sure who decided to hire this guy out of pity, but he is single handedly killing this restaurants and I can only hope the staff come to understand the issues he causes from not only my review here, but many other reviews stating the EXACT same issue as mine. Save your time and money on this one.”

“Best chippy in the area by far, we call there large fish and chips whale and chips as you get such a large fish. Tried there large pizza last time 16 inch for £8.50 such good value. Would recommended this chippy as great service and even better value.”

“Don’t know what happened to the service, only if they didn’t hire weirdos with no sense of English or decency to take order. The weird looking thing guy who is probably out of his head heard something and put something else. Started fumbling when i said you made a mistake instead of fixing it when it was still possible and not a big deal. I loved coming here but sadly this might be the last. Feeling sorry for the owner who hired such people of pity.”

“I almost don't want to review this because if more people go, the prices will go up. This place is great. The pizza is one of the best pizzas I've had from a takeaway shop, the chicken is always deliciously crunchy, which a lot of takeaways lack, their chips are huge portions for a good price, great portions in general, their mixed kebab is pretty good. Good variety of drinks. I always go for their pizza because it's the best takeaway pizza honestly. The cheese on the crust is 🤤 Scallops are perfect, too. Try this place, for sure.”
