Customer Review Summary
Grilled or roasted fish with plantain is the dish diners name most, with the Suya bao buns, peppered beef, small chops and peppersoup praised close behind. Oxtail divides opinion: one reviewer found every dish delicious, while another thought it less tasty than hoped, though the portions were plentiful. Puff puff and banana bread are called tasty desserts, and a fruit slush watermelon mocktail gets a mention. The setting earns repeated praise, with reviewers describing stunning decor, a live band and singer, and a good DJ, and one calling it plush and swanky. The main complaint is pace. A few say food took a long time, including on nights that were not busy, and one noted only one server on during lunch. One also found it a bit pricey, though fair given the ambience. Service otherwise draws attentive and courteous remarks, but one diner asked the waitress for mac and cheese to go and left without it because she never came back.

“Food was pretty good and good portion, I had grilled fish, plantain, coleslaw and mac and cheese. Service was very poor, asked the waitress to have my mac and cheese to go, she didn't come back till I left without it. Maybe the fish should not be served on the wooden slate as the oil was dripping all over the table.”

“Afro Birmingham is a wonderful place to spend the evening. The atmosphere is aesthetically pleasing, cozy, and inviting. The food was exceptionally well prepared and beautifully presented. The staff clearly take pride in satisfying their customers, paying close attention to every detail. They did not put a foot wrong, and the overall experience was excellent.”
