Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips draw the most comment, and reviewers split sharply on them. Supporters describe fish cooked fresh with the right amount of batter, chips cut from real potatoes, and cod that was very tasty and really white, with one noting improvement after the shop was taken over. Doner meat, kebabs, cheesy chips and a special chicken burger meal also earn praise, along with friendly staff, one of whom offered to charge a customer's phone during a long order. The complaints are specific. Reviewers describe chips that were rock hard or re-fried, batter crunchy like pretzels from old oil, a battered sausage like cardboard, and a cod fillet that was thin and greasy. One reviewer reports a human hair in their chips, and another reports mold on a beef pasty. A server who ignored a request for open wrapping and a staff member who laughed during a complaint also draw criticism. In one case a manager offered a replacement meal and a partial refund.

“Since King Cod was taken over a few weeks back, we have seen a real improvement in the quality of the chips and food in general. My cod was very tasty this evening and really white. Well done, we will definitely keep coming back and highly recommend you to anyone wanting quality fish and chips in Kempston and Bedford.”

“Have to say this is the worst tasting chips I have ever had. Called in at lunchtime, never had to wait to long,I specifically asked for my food to be open twice, server could not follow basic instructions, I did say to him I asked for it to be open,he did apologise and said he will change it to open,I told him not to bother now. I took the food out to my car, disgusting re fried chips,is this why they were wrapped and not left open because I would have seen how they looked if they were open. Straight in the bin outside King Cod they went.”

“I no longer live in kempston but still find myself going to this chipshop. The kebabs, fish and chips and cheesy chips are a staple order. Good quality and reasonable price, friendly staff.”

“Food was so bad, I returned to the shop with the chips. The batter on the cod and the chips were crunchy like pretzels. Old oil used. I complained to the manager who was did offer me another meal but I declined. He refunded me some money from the increased prices which I thought was acceptable as some of the meal had been eaten. I asked him not to insult customers by serving this poor standard of food. A member of his staff (young asian man) laughed as I was explaining the poor service. Clearly he needs further training along with Bedford Council's Trading Standards visiting the shop. The 5* hygiene rating is questionable as there has been little improvement from my last visit a few months ago. I WILL NOT REVISIT THIS SHOP OR RECOMMEND IT. Travel a little further to Luci & Lina Fish Bar. King Cod need to learn from them.”
