About The St Helena Restaurant
The St Helena Restaurant is a Bedford restaurant on High St, set in a building once the home of John Bunyan, in Elstow, so a meal here comes with a piece of local history. Dinner opens with an amuse bouche and fresh bread, and courses arrive through table service. The menu includes a haggis starter and a steak main, with a cheese course to finish. Diners can also be seated in the conservatory. Reservations are required. The wine list includes rosé and red.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return to St Helena's above all for the occasion dinner, with birthdays and family celebrations coming up repeatedly, and several mention visiting for over 40 years. The food is described as exquisite and beautifully presented, with individual diners singling out the haggis starter, a perfectly cooked steak, and the cheese course. Close behind is the welcome from the owners and staff, whom reviewers call warm, attentive and unhurried, with courses that are not rushed. The setting also draws praise: the garden for a pre-dinner drink, a conservatory, and a fantastic wine list, with rosé and red both going down well. One reviewer calls it fine dining that is not too stuffy, and another says the modest outside gives way to a warm, welcoming room. No reviewer raises a complaint. One long-standing regular, who has been visiting for 25 years, closes by calling it exceptional value and says the evening starts each time with a little amuse bouche and fresh bread.

“Visited The St Helena Restaurant in Elstow and it genuinely surprised me in a good way. From the outside it looks quite modest, but once you’re in, the atmosphere is really warm and welcoming, nicely done without trying too hard. Food wise, you can tell they take pride in what they serve. I went for a steak which was cooked perfectly, juicy and full of flavour. We also had a couple of starters and a dessert to share, everything nicely presented and clearly made fresh. Portions were just right, not tiny, not over the top. Service was spot on. Friendly staff, relaxed vibe, and they actually give you time to enjoy your meal instead of rushing you through courses. Always a big plus. Overall it’s one of those places that feels reliable. Good food, nice setting, and a comfortable atmosphere. Definitely a solid choice if you’re around Bedford and want something a bit nicer without going overboard.”

As always, the food was excellent, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making the occasion truly special. Raff and Frank continue to be fantastic hosts, and their personal touch is one of the reasons we keep returning year after year. Thank you to the whole team for making my birthday such a memorable and enjoyable celebration — we look forward to many more visits.”
