Quick info
About The White Horse Inn
The White Horse Inn is a bar and grill in Ballynahinch, set in a stone-walled pub at 49-53 Main St with several dining areas. A pizza side runs in the other part of the restaurant, while the main menu includes honey chilli chicken, which can be ordered as strips, with an option to upgrade the mash to chorizo mash. Battered haddock comes with chunky chips, and a Guinness & steak pie is among the other dishes. Specials rotate alongside the regular menu, and cask ale is poured at the bar. The beer garden welcomes dogs, so owners can bring them along.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are sharper. One diner found the smoked haddock small and tough, and said the burger patty and chips were not homemade, which clashed with the lovely interior. Another describes a late evening order that came wrong twice, a burger stripped of its bacon and patty and left with a thin piece of chicken, a dispute over paying full price, and no callback from management. On a happier note, one parent describes a chef making garlic chilli prawns off menu for a seafood-loving child.

“Wouldn't rate the place, used to be a huge fan. Until I decided to go to White horse after my little dog passed away. The purpose was to cheer myself up & actually eat some food as I hadn't eaten properly in a while due to stress. We had an absolutely horrible experience. one of the worst experiences Ive ever experienced in a restaurant. I came home crying, humiliated & starving. Ive asked management to call me back about the matter but my custom must not be appreciated or valued. Real shame, I loved the white horse the staff were amazing barr one young member of staff which let everyone at white horse down, and gave me such an awful experience that I will never gone back. I was so shocked by the member of staff serving us, she got my order wrong twice & had a real attitude about it. I basically asked for southern fried chicken burger with peppered sauce, but instead got the ultimate burger. I made the staff member aware this isn't what ordered her response "you did order that burger" we were shocked.... She took the food away came back again, what she had done was gone into the kitchen & removed the bacon & burger meat from the ultimate burger & left the piece of chicken which was so thin, in comparison to how the southern chicken burger usually is a huge piece of chicken but because she got my order wrong & brought me ultimate burger instead of southern fried burger. I now ended up with the tiniest bit of chicken in my burger so tiny there was too much bap! It was late @ night not far away from 9pm, I made the manager Ryan aware that I was not prepared to pay full price for less than half the burger I usually receive when ordering my usual southern fried chick burger with peppered sauce. I showed Ryan how little chicken was in my burger, he agreed i wouldnt pay full price for something I hadnt received. We went to pay & all Ryan had taken off was our soft drinks, White horse still wanted me to pay full price for southern fried burger. the bill came to £21.45 or something very close to that. I put £20 on the bar & said that's all I was prepared to pay for bascially chips & soft drink. As the burger was no were near up to standard & there was so little chicken in the burger the dish was absolutely not worth what it usually was. I payed £20 left the restaurant, 2 young members of staff chased me out of the restaurant asking me for £1.45, they were giggling. I decided to return to restaurant to find out the young member of staff name, i walked in on the staff member bad mouthing me to other customers, as I left the restaurant for the second time, the customers shouted abuse at me. It was awful, i'd just lost my wee dog & white horse is where I choose to go, because I loved the place, the staff, the food but this incident happened in January & ive never set foot in the place again. if I were to write the whole experience out people would be in absolute shock. but to protect myself & my wellbeing i wont even write it out. I was made to feel like my experience & how I was treated didn't matter. prior to this awful experience we went to White Horse 3 /4 times a month, loved the place! Saddest part it how unprofessional management handled the situation or more rather didnt handle the situation. No empathy, no professionalism, no phone back about the situation. Months on & I am still upset at the situation.”

“Came here with Canadian friends for lunch. Staff are lovely and friendly. The dining areas are atmospheric and cosy and the chairs are comfy. The food portions are generous and delicious. We had the battered fish, honey chilli chicken and scampi (one with mash and one with sweet potato fries. ) ww couldn't finish everything even though we really wanted too ! We'll definitely be back !”

“My little boy is obsessed with seafood and was desperate for garlic chilli prawns (lol) the fact the waitress went to ask the chef alone was polite enough but the fact the chef went ahead and made them off menu was so lovely! And they were delicious!!! And I left with a happy full bellied child😊 great staff, food is second to none. Thank you!”

“Had a fantastic meal here recently. The quality of the food is outstanding, and the presentation really stands out, especially the way they garnish the dishes with fresh spring onions and chili. Every plate we ordered was fresh and flavorful. I was particularly impressed by the perfect golden pastry on the pie. This is a gem in Saintfield that I will definitely be visiting again soon.”

“We had the burger and haddock with chunky chips. The piece of fish was small and somehow seemed overcooked, as some of the fish was a tough texture and tasted terrible because it was smoked haddock - not what we expected. The outside batter was quite nice but just a little mushy underneath. The burger was not a homemade beef patty, which I was expecting because the Inn itself is quite nice inside and I assumed it was more upscale. Even the chips weren’t homemade or tasty, so overall our dining experience was very disappointing. The good reviews are deceiving. Sadly I won’t be back during my visit and I’m hesitant now to try the pizza in the other side of the restaurant in case it’s the same kitchen/owners etc. I would suggest more homemade options. It’s a lovely looking pub inside but the food quality definitely doesn’t match the atmosphere. There are signs for fresh potatoes everywhere in the area, so the least they could do is cut their own fresh chips!”
